Temperature

Featured Replies

Afternoon all

so recently the engine management light keeps coming on and of the code reader says temperature sensor

but since Thursday it’s stopped on and today it went to just below the red on the temperature clock

so guessing it’s just the sensor ?

coolant is full other than that car is fine

Which temperature sensor?

depending on your car and engine there can be up to roughly 10 across the whole car.

and what is it saying about the temp sensor circuit? As it won’t be saying faulty sensor, it will give more specifics

If it was coolant bypass valve, that's the TMCU or electronic thermostat. That will drive an engine light and will need to be replaced in all likelihood if it is reporting a static or in your case probably Intermittent open circuit fault. Check for wiring fault first though.   Strange descriptor -  I thought for a bit it was referring to one of the coolant flow solenoids.

Been quoted £1500 by Skoda 🤣🤣

a 4 year old car with 45,000 miles costing this and it’s a common fault and still putting the same engine in the new one

it’s going asap of back to a 5 Series 530 never had anything like this with bmw

Unlucky.

You must have been lucky with the BMW,s or just had petrols because 3 series and 5 series diesels have had the coolant leak recalls because of the fire risk.

Sounds like as I suspected. It is the electronic thermostat.

They are a fair bit of work to replace. Not impossible DIY, but not a lot of fun!

Took me 2 days - but I did have a problem which required most to be disassembled a second time.

I think the workshop estimates are allocated like 6 hours ish for complete job. The replacement unit remains much the same as when the gen 3 was first released.  They are a weak point in all gen 3 EA888s. The engineering inside them only built to last so long and so many duty cycles. I got 6.5 years / 70k miles on my golf R out of  the original one.

I would say this is not the only component  part existing across all motor marques (including BMW), that is not built to be durable beyond 4 / 5 year mileage.....
