Struggling to figure out as to why my fuel mileage/range seems to go down quick

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 2008 Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi.

I've owned it for a few months and I've noticed that the fuel range seems to go down fairly quickly.

I've done the general things to make sure the engine is getting what it needs (new air filter, fuel filter, inflated tyres and ran diesel cleaner through it)

The MPG counter says I'm averaging between 60mpg and 70mpg on a daily trip but it seems to lose quite alot of fuel. And as I encounter a slight hill it just seems to drink it. (I don't tend to drive hilly areas often, alot of motorway.)

For example, I went out to do something and made a round journey of 80 miles. The range on my dash stated 380 miles of range at the start and once I got home the range stated 265 miles. I'm a very liberal driver.. I don't put my foot down too much and I try to drive economically.

Is this just how my car is and the range counter's accurate or is there something possibly causing this to happen that I haven't considered. Thank you.

The best way to check mpg is keeping mileage readings and fuelling the car Full tank to full tank.

If the predicted range was based upon your computers current age mpg status The range changes if the avge drops.

You can toggle between current consumption, Average consumption and range.

If you leave it on Current consumption you can see the figure rise to 99.9mpg whilst going down hill and down to below 20mpg going up.

A true average of 60 -70 mpg would be fantastic for a 1.9 diesel but i imagine involves many motorway miles.

Hones john customer real mpg reviews.

@Apollyon001 Firstly, the available range mode is biased by what you achieved on the last fill, and on recent miles. For example, I would normally have used my car for a commute of about 11 miles, the last half mile being up a steep hill. I would occasionally make a trip that involved most of the commute, and then another 9 miles of more or less level roads. I would invariably reach the destination on those trips (less than one trip per tank of fuel) showing a greater available range than I left my house with.

As @Stonekeeper implies, the only reliable MPG figures are those derived from distance covered / fuel volume used data over preferably several complete tanks of of fuel...

If helps, using the fuel computer in my car i avge 34.6 mpg

On my trip to devon this year i left the house with a full tank and a range of 426. as i went down the motorway the range increased to a point where i had done over 100 mile and had range left more than i left home with, i seem to remember it reaching 500 miles as i travelled.

@Apollyon001Welcome.

Brim that tank sometime and drive 70 miles and brim it again and see if it needs only 4.546 litres.

Averages.

If you were averaging 60-70 mpg then you would need to be getting 80-90 mpg sometimes to account for when getting 40-50 mpg.

We do not buy fuel in gallons anyway, it is in litres so 10 miles to a litre is not great, 45 litres = 450 miles.

15 miles to a litre is lovely.  675 miles.

Range is calculated as explained above, all things being equal its pretty accurate to just under 1/2 a tank at which point both the fuel guage and the indicated range drop far quicker than the actual fuel consumed, this is to create a virtual reserve capacity of 5-7 litres of fuel remaining when the tank shows zero and remaining miles show zero, I always drive another 50-80 miles after that point and in doing so I can refill to very close to the actual fuel tank capacity and have a range that equals what is shown straight after the fill up.

I can usually judge mine down to the last couple of litres and have not run out yet which would be undesirable with the common rail engine, on my last 800km autoroute journey I refilled with 59.4 litres after holding out for the exit and cheaper fuel station that I wanted, that was cutting it a bit fine.
