Headlights dip beam stops working - Skoda Fabia 2 2010

Featured Replies

Hi,

Can someone please help with the following issue.. the dip beam headlights on my Fabia 1.2 petrol just stop working. The side lights work, the main beam (flash) works but the normal dip light will work normally and randomly turn off. One off they'll probably be off for a few days or so and then suddenly start working again. I have already checked the light switch with a replacement, checked the fuses, bulbs and have even had a diagnostics done on it but still no luck.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I had similar symptoms with mine(mk1). It needed a new dip switch.

Hi Paw4Thot,

Thanks for responding and apologies for the late reply. Is the dip switch that you're referring to the same as the one that you rotate to select side, dipped lights. If it is then I've also replaced that but the issue still remain.

Thanks

You're describing the headlight switch. The dip switch is the one that swaps between dip and main beam, flashes the headlights and works the indicators.

Hi Paw4Thot,

So the dip switch works as normal regarding indicators, flash the headlights and swap between dip or main beam. Did these functions, with the exception of dip beam, all work correctly on the dip switch before you replaced it. Reason I ask is that I don't want to have to go and get a new dip switch to then find that the problem still persists.

Thanks

P.S apologies again for the late response. I don't get much time to go on my personal laptop.

No problem. You've described exactly the symptoms and cure. The issue is that the dip headlight (but not the full beam) contacts burn out over time (measured in years).

Digging up an old thread here, but I'm facing the exact same issue and symptoms.

If it possible to repair the column switch, or only replace it?

It's quite an expensive part to write off over what I presume is just some dodgy contacts, especially for the 1.2TSI elegance with cruise control - £120 part + from a quick glance, plus some confusion over exactly which part number I need and the risk of buying the wrong one.

Has anyone had any luck at trying to clean / repair the contacts in the existing one?

Or alternatively, what are people's thoughts on bypassing the dip switch entirely, and maybe just putting a dedicated switch on the dash or something?

Would it be possible to isolate this control from the main beams? Does it even need to be mutually exclusive? Would the car suffer any consequences if both full and dipped beams were on at the same time, retaining full beam control through the old column switch, and dipped beam via a dash mounted switch? I have no idea if the power draw would be too great, or the light perhaps too blinding.
