Haunted Roomster

Featured Replies

 Hello Everyone.

This is the first of probably many queries I have about my 2007 Roomster 3 1.9 Tdi. So one at a time. here goes.

The internal blower fan speeds up when the brake padel is pressed.

Any insights, anybody?

Cheers.

Does it happen at a standstill, or only when moving?

  • Author

Hi, thanks for the reply. It happens moving or not. Also, if the wipers are on, braking, in motion or stationary, activates the rear wiper.

Hmm, good extra data.

Sounds like the car is getting a signal as if it's been put in reverse gear each time the brakes are applied.

On your drive, with an assistant, see if reverse light(s) are coming on with brake lights, even in neutral.

Selecting reverse with  blower on automatically switches air intake to recirculation mode which increases sound in cabin.

Selecting reverse with front wipers on adds rear wiper action...

Thanks, I'll check later and get back to you, it's getting a bit cold and dark here. Like I said earlier, there are several other issues but I'll get round to describing them properly as I find them. I haven't had the car long.

Hi, managed to give the car a better, but still not exhaustive look at yesterday.

Horror story!

No reversing bulbs....removed by the previous owner to disguise the fact that when the brakes are pressed, the reverse lights come on. As you said , the car thinks it's in reverse when braking. Havn't checked for reverse lights on selection of reverse gear yet.

Reverse parking aid pops up briefly first time brakes are pressed, I've switched that off now though.

Glowplug warning lamp flashing continuously. Actually obscured by black tape or similar behind the clocks. Just visible in the dark. I've not investigated further yet but I'm wondering what else has been tampered with.

Did I mention there's a towbar? I'm not looking forward to inspecting that wiring.

Ever get that sinking feeling?

Cheers

Was going to be my next question if you found what I thought you might.

Probably got a little bypass relay thing somewhere in the boot area which has been miswired or just scruffily (shortily?) wired. If you find such a thing, look for stray wire strands, or just rip it out and tape up all loose wires for now.

Sad thing is, I believe a 2007 Roomy may well be perfectly happy with towbar wiring directly fed from the existing bulb wires without such a relay thing. Will check this out for you later, but I think factory towbar wiring just parallels off.

There's a cute 10-second coding job you can do with VCDS (lite) to tell the 'vehicle voltage control unit' there's a towbar  socket wired in, after which you'll get an extra visual indication on the dash when connected and indicating (this legally substitutes for the beep function of the bypass relay things).

 7-pin or 13-pin towbar socket? I imagine it's a 7.

Glowplug light may well be a result of same issue.

Don't panic. 🙂

Thanks for your words of reassurance @Breezy_Pete. Trying not to panic😬

I wont be able to look at the car again until the weekend, but I can confirm that there are two towbar outlets, both 7-pin mounted one above the other. (Upper one's got a black cover, the lower white if that's relevant) I'll try to trace the wiring soon.

You mention VCDS (lite). Could you maybe recommend a suitable interface that won't break the bank? I'd like to see what's going on, error code-wise.  I tried using an ELM 37 Bluetooth adapter with Torque Lite app that i used to use with a previous car (vauxhall astra '03) but unsurprisingly read no fault codes.

Cheers again

@ThudIIRC, the socket with the black cover is for trailer lights (tail, side, stop, reversing) The white cover one is for trailer ancillaries like auxiliary battery charging, interior lighting, etc.

I used a Gendan-branded cable that's about £20 delivered.  Cheaper versions definitely can be had but aren't likely to have any support if problems are met with.

They used to be blue, but pretty sure this is same one.

Also pretty confident it'll work with Roomster built before March 2010, despite what might be shown here.

Won't do autoscan without registering the software, but can scan individual modules and do most things that the more expensive full VCDS cables can. See here for table

Thanks All,

Cheers for the towbar plug info @Warrior193, turms out the cables leading to them have been snipped. No connection to the sockets. I'll be examining the wiring in greater detail as soon as poss, looking for shorts etc. with a view to completely removing it. Don't need a towbar anyway🙂

Looking into that, thanks @Breezy_Pete.

Hi All, I'm back again with a couple of questions. If I'm posting in the wrong place please forgive me and maybe a moderator could put it where it shoult be, thanks.

On closer examination, my Roomster brake pedal switch has been relpaced with an obviously "wrong" part. The wrong switch in question has only two terminals, spliced into two wires on the original 4 terminal connector. Could anyone tell me the original part number for a pukka brake pedal switch, and maybe point my to an idiot's guide to fitting it.

Cheers.

Hi All,

I'm currently looking for a suitable replacement brake pedal switch (see my previous post) and looking at this forums handy parts guide;

"New non adjustable brake light switch,6Q0 945 511.  Some seam to think it only comes in green but mine is black but it does have a white tip on the plunger."

So...there's an adjustable one?

Can anyone tell me if this part is suitable for my  2007 Roomster 3, 1.9 TDI. BSW.

Apart from the obvious answer, what's the difference between adjustable and non adjustable? Why would it need to be adjustable? What's adjustable about it?

I've registered myself on ErWin Skoda intending to download wiring diagrammes and parts info, but before I commit to buying some time there, does anyone have any helpful hints regards fitting a new switch, either flavour.

In it's present condition that unidentified switch pictured previously at least operates the brake lights. As for the reversing lights, I've jury rigged a toggle switch and lamp so I can temporarily get by with that!

@Breezy_Pete Thanks again for putting me on to the Gendan cable and VCDS(lite). No doubt I'll have more daft questions after I get to use it more. I've not reset any of the DTC's it showed me yet, Not until I gain a better undestanding of what they mean. Managed to do an autoscan after modifying the AutoScan.txt file. It might be of use to others here.

The part number you quoted is correct for brake light switch, see here https://www.lllparts.co.uk/catalogs/skoda/CZ/RO/481/9/945/945050

erWin Skoda does not offer part number info by the way.

Genuine switch  recommended,  not vastly expensive (£20.88 retail, inc VAT at Skoda dealership currently),  and very straightforward to fit.

Just twist and remove old one, twist other way to fit new. Older versions required pedal to be pressed whilst doing so, or some such palaver.

Reverse light hack sounds cunning, and not in MOT so could remain indefinitely.

Hello again, I haven't got round to fitting the new brake light switch yet, something more pressing has turned up. Though fine yesterday, today I've no brake lights and the fob activated central locking stopped working. The car locked me out, or rather, refused to open this afternoon. Coincidence or not? Where would I start?

New thread?

Cheers

Fit that brake light switch.

It may be that the brake lights have stayed on and depleted the battery?

Hi, I'll hopefully be able to get the switch fitted tomorrow but have first to look at and sort out the wiring for it. That suspect switch seems to have failed (is it on a fuse?) The car now doesn't think it's in reverse constantly, unlike previously described.

No voltage at brake lights, they don't switch on at all, so I don't think battery drain is an issue, thanks for the suggestion though.

Nope, ignore that. Talking rubbish! Of course I can't autoscan, I've not registered or authorised my VCDS(lite) yet. Doh!

Fuse 21 (10A) feeds the brake light switch (NO) for the lamps, on a red/black wire, pin 1 of connector at switch. Feed to bulbs is the black/red on pin 4.

This black/red from the downstream side of the NO switch also connects to inputs of ABS module and engine ECU.

Fuse 32 (5A) feeds the brake pedal switch (NC), for the engine ECU's info on 'pedal-pressed', on a thinner blue/red wire at pin 2. Connection to engine ECU is via the black/green wire on pin 3.

NO = Normally Open (no connection when foot off pedal)

NC = Normally Closed (always connected except when pedal is pressed)

@Breezy_Pete

Thanks for the valuable info. It's good to have confirmed in words what I see from the current flow diagrammes. They're a bit different to what I've been used to!

Anyway, have a happy new year and thanks for all your help thus far.

Cheers 🤘
