Hey Skoda folks!

Just got my 2014 Rapid back from an normal oil change. Weird enough the car started to make weird noises after this service. The mechanic called, saying they're hesitant to drive it because of a loud rattling noise after the service (before it was all good). Well I drove to the place, checked it myself, and it was making a terrible noise indeed. Drove it a short distance, and bam, low oil pressure warning with a red alert.

Mechanic and the chief couldn't figure out the issue righ there but the chief suggested changing the chain asap and told that it is the only reason behind it. Things started to sound suspicious, since the chain would have probably given some fault codes, and I didn't want to leave my car there, so called a tow truck to take it to an authorized mechanic. Also their car inspection tool did not get any fault codes from the car even the car monitor showed a low oil pressure warning.

Any idea how likely it is that the chain loosens up the second it has been serviced? What else could be causing this, and what questions should I ask the authorized mechanic? The mechanic shop opens next monday so I have plenty of time to think about this.

Crazy day! Thanks for any help.

Which engine type?

I think the 1.2 TSI has a common 'gotcha' where a seal gets left behind by the old oil filter and screws things up with similar symptoms.

Oh jeez forgot the most important thing from the post. But yeah it has a 1.2 TFSI.

I read something about this but really makes me wonder how could they not notice this.

So maybe the timing chain is ok after all? Maybe they will check it also at the authorized dealer.

Thanks!

Ask them to check the oil filter seal. They should be familiar with the problem.

Bet the chain is OK.

Timing chain will not cause lack of oil pressure, the missing seal will.

However the lack of oil pressure will definitely cause timing chain rattle and also top end tappet noise.

I feel so sad for those who have no choice but to put their vehicles in the hands of garages, many would be better off running them into the ground and never even having the oil and filter changed compared to the damage that all too frequently occurs when they pay supposed professionals to do it.

That just about sums up the level of stupidity, they do an oil and filter change, the engine knocks and the low oil pressure warning light come on, do they question what they did? No they expect a fault code reader to tell them whats wrong!!!

Shame there is not an OBDII code for incompetent mechanic.

I had my local 'trusted' garage do the service on my 1.2TSi (Toledo) to be fair to them they are on the whole ok. The 2nd service I had with them was different, they left the sealing ring in from the previous oil filter, it had dropped off the filter. So I had 2 sealing rubbers in there, I only realised when doing the next service myself. No harm done there but I guess no sealing ring could spell trouble.

Missed a couple of air box screws too, lazy mechanic presumed lost them and couldn't be arsed to replace. They did get me some spares and fitted them pretty swiftly though.

Allright. Got the car back from the authorized shop. They switched the oil filter to an OEM one. Problem gone for now.

I will still look forward and listen carefully if something shows up. I hope the idle with a faulty oil filter did not do any harm to the engine.

I guess I will now inform the other mechanic that they made a service mistake and ask for a refund of some kind. Lets see how it ends.

Thank you all for the help!

Hi,

I changed my oil on my Rapid on the weekend, same engine (1.2 TFSI 105PS) and it's done 71k miles. I normally use Castrol Edge Titanium but this time I used the Long Life stuff. Once I started the engine I got a loud rattling at idle, I'm used to some rattling but this was noticeable. I then took it for a drive and at speed (above about 30mph) there was no rattling at all however the oil pressure light came on for about 30 seconds (flashed up about 3 times with the beeps) then disappeared again. Oil temp is fine, no OBD2 codes relating to oil etc.

This morning I drove to work which involves motorway, thought a good drive might clear things up. Everything was fine until I got to the office and the oil pressure light came on again - one was just once then disappeared then again it stayed on for a couple of cycles then again disappeared.

Not sure where to go with it from here - I've made the mistake of leaving the seals from the filter in before so I made sure I took them all out before inserting the new one. I've checked the levels of the oil and they're fine, so there's no leaks. I've been doing oil changes for years so this one has me stumped. Anything else I could have missed? Difference in oil causing it?

Thanks in advance

Perhaps you have been given/sold the wrong filter type? Was it visually the same or different to what came off?

It's possible you have a coincidental failure of the oil pressure switch, find and disconnect the 1-wire connector from it to see if there is leaked oil inside it.

I think they've given me the wrong filter.

I've just been to my car to check and the one on there is part number 04E 115 561 AC. From the pictures at the bottom it's "flat" with a thin rubber seal on the outside. However I've just been looking at other filters and I think I should have been given 03C 115 561. This one has the two rubber rings protruding outside of the housing. I was given this by a Skoda dealer and didn't notice myself when putting it on. Will give them a ring now and see what they say.

I'm assuming I need to re-drain all the oil out to replace it? There's no shortcut? Any long-term damage being done in the meantime, I'm hoping I can get home and sort it in the morning before work. Oil changes are easy but getting the undertray out is the hardest part, especially trying to get to the very back two screws which are nearly in the middle of the vehicle)! I don't have an oil extractor either - I would use it in this circumstance but prefer to do the traditional way to get rid of gunk.

I think you can probably change it without losing much if any oil on a 1.2 TSI, others will know better than me, never done one.

Likely is the wrong filter, I'd say.

So I got the wife to check the invoice (which has the correct part number) and the old filter which I left in a bag in the recycling temporarily and the part numbers are the same. The one I put on my car on the weekend has a different number. The dealer will swap it out for me.

I'll give it a go without draining, may be a little messy but I think I would just take it off, catch any oil and put it back into the housing before putting the new filter in. Wish me luck!

Also thanks @Breezy_Pete for the help, much appreciated.

Last update - the Skoda dealer gave me the correct filter, no questions asked which was good. Got home, covered the engine and alternator with rags and replaced the filter, I added a little more fresh oil into the housing. Turned the car on and problem solved, it's now as quiet as a mouse - no error codes on Carista, nothing on my dash.

Many thanks again
