Citigo ignition not working

Featured Replies

Driving our 2015 citigo on the motorway. No issues. Stopped at the services and it wouldn't start again. Absolutely no response from the ignition. No lights come on on the dash even in position 1, no clicking, nothing. Battery is fine, lights, central locking, etc all working. The milometer lights up when the door opens so dash has some power. Just nothing at all when the key is turned. Any ideas?  Fuses seem fine. I checked, so did the AA man. Got a lift home on a truck and not sure what to try next.

Sounds like ignition switch failure.

That was my first thought last night. It certainly felt like that. I've done a little more investigation in the cold light of the morning. Turning the key to position 1 does turn on the radio, blower and cigarette socket. I missed this last night at the roadside. Nothing at all on the dash but it seems the ignition switch is energising other circuits.

Check blade fuse no.6 on battery-top fuseholder.

All the fuses in the battery top fusebox are fine. I even swapped a couple just to be sure. Checked the fuses in the footwell as best I could too and they seemed fine.

Does this car have start/stop?

  • Author

No itt doesn't have stop/start l. I did wonder about immobiliser issues but I assume there would still be at least some dash lights coming on.

I'll have a look at circuits on big screen shortly. I was just looking at a couple of relays that might've been worth checking, if it had had start/stop.

Can you message me the VIN so I can find a build date please?

Thanks. Message sent

I'm seeing nothing 'in the way' between ignition switch terminal 50 (red/black wire 2.5mm CSA) and starter motor solenoid connection (thinnest wire going to starter).

If you have a voltmeter/multimeter and an assistant, you can maybe disconnect this wire at the starter solenoid, and see if it is getting 12V relative to battery negative when the key is turned all the way to the position usually associated with starter motor noises.

After all that it turns out it was the ignition switch. First instinct was right 🙄. There must be multiple circuits in the switch so while the accessories, fan, etc were working the contact for the actual ignition must have been faulty. New switch and all is good.

The old switch was a right pain to get out. Supposedly you put two small screwdrivers down the side of the switch to release the tabs that hold it in but there is no room to do that in situ. Managed to get some Allen keys in, felt like they were on the tabs, but no amount of wiggling would release the tabs. After some more leverage the switch broke in two and eventually came out. New one went in easily, fired up first go.
