Cheap car tracker

Featured Replies

Interesting idea, and could work.

With the only worry being the drain on the car battery...

Take the phone out of it's case and drop it into a box with suitable battries, you could easily find a cavity to mount it in and use a suitable car charger to do it. That way they wouldn't know what it was if anything so might leave it in there when they started stripping the car.

Sounds like a good easy idea.

Only comment would be that the PAYG sims tend to expire if you don't use them or put credit on them every so often. You would have to find out how often and put say £5 on the phone every 3 months. So about £20 a year to run as opposed to free, but hey still cheap.

couldn't you just put a PAYG phone in the car (constantly on) and then if car is knicked triangulate the location of the phone from the networks' transmitters. Police can do this and do to locate criminals and missing persons etc...

Yes but you need to wire the PAYG up to a power source, hence a little black box with a power cable and and ariel lead off it and it isn't obvious.

If somebody wants to get me the parts I'll happily build them the box, just as I feel like doing some electronics at the moment.

great idea... but for 1 small problem...... switching it off in fuel stations( a lot of cars are pinched from these)

Like the way he tells swmbo about this idea(he didnt)!!!!!!!
