Gas release hiss when pressing accelerator pedal and loss of power

Featured Replies

Dear Forum Members,

After my previous Octavia was written off I thought I was fortunate to source a 2019 reg automatic, petrol version. I think I have been sold a duff car and I hoped your learned experience might help me troubleshoot the issues.

I did not notice the sound when I briefly test drove the car but it has become more prevelant. When pressing the accelerator a hissing sound is produced, like a leaking aersol can or loosened pop bottle. There has been a decrease in the power output from the engine with the revs not rising steadily and aberant, sharp gear changes occuring. On Sunday the car struggled up the motorway incline sections quite noticeably.

I know I need another visit to the garage but any advice on underlying causes would be gratefully received.

I have changed the spark plugs quite recently. Some of the symptoms experienced yesterday were very similar to when a plug failed, although the car went into limp home mode which it did not do on Sunday. The car had seemed better but the hissing sound has become more obvious as time has gone on. I only do about 100 miles a week at most. The lightest touch on the accelerator pedal does not generate the sound but 95% of the pedal movement creates the noise. Releasing the pedal stops the noise immediately. I am very gentle with the pedal action, not a stomper.

Best wishes, Malc

Hello Malc,

If you are hearing a 'hiss', it is probably a leak from the EGR or from the turbo - neither of which are terrible fixes to sort out. Can you update your profile to show what your latest car is please? It is also worth getting a code scan done to see if the car is throwing a code. Check out the VCDS owners list to ask somebody closeby to scan your car with VCDS or Odbeleven. We might be able to comment more fully then.

Dear Forum Members,

I just thought I would update that the car has been fixed. The exhaust gas pipe had a broken seal and connector which had worked loose an additional joint. No wonder it was gasping with poor acceleration. Was a difficult job to get the new part snuggly fitted but job complete and the engine is back to it's usual sound.

Thank you again. Best wishes, Malc

Thanks for letting us know the outcome, so many don't.
