Gear selector fault - experience with ignoring it?

Featured Replies

Does anyone have longtime experience with just ignoring the DSG gear selector fault? The one, where a yellow light comes on, and the text says something like (in my translation from Danish): "Fault in gear selector. You can continue driving, but should consult your workshop".
Judged from this forum, and a Danish forum I participate in, this fault is quite common. For me, it started about 4-5 months ago, when the car was about 2½ years old. The error-light comes on 1-3 times in a row, when the car is started. Then it disappears, usually for several weeks. Then it might come on again for 1-3 times - etc., etc.
I went to the workshop, where I was confirmed that this was acknowledged by Skoda as a common error. Therefore I was offered a discount on the spare part. But changing it is apparently complicated, and the workshop will charge me 8.500 DKR / 1.100 € to do that.
Now I wonder what will happen if I just keep ignoring it........

I had it for a few days in a row in September, it disappeared and didn't come up since.

WTF

My 2015 Golf had it and the dealer replaced the shifter under warranty. It wasn't causing any problems, it was only the recurring message. I don't think the root cause has ever been proerly addressed by VAG, therefore matter keeps cropping up.

Had this on and off for a while then became constant. Had it done under warranty but apparently it is a 4 hour job so costly if you are paying. The dealer told me it was fine to continue driving and I did for about 4 weeks before it was fixed (earliest dealer could get car in which sums up my local dealer).

Funnily enough, I got this error on Saturday again, first time since September. New MySkoda app just sent appointment request automatically (to a big surprise of mine) and they called me back from workshop today, saying it can wait till oil change and they'll check it then, unless I want to get appointment earlier.

As far as I understood, it is a known issue and especially if your dealer admitted it, the part must be provided for free. There are 4 hours of work to swap it, so that shouldn't cost more than 4x hourly rate, which, I guess, would total in less than 400 eur even in Denmark? So perhaps you could insist on them providing part for free, not just some nonsense discount.

Going to fix mine. The part costs 379 EUR, for works they take 5 hours 48 minutes. Total cost in Spain is 789.82 plus VAT.
