The "should be fine" approach you took to your worn brakes was not meticulous.

I'm not saying it was wrong or unreasonable, or that it was skimping on maintenance. I'm saying it was not meticulous.

Jeez oh...   Read that definition and then read your definition above.  If you can't see the difference then it's time to pack it in.
