New Octavia, fuel full tank “swooshing”

Featured Replies

Hey everyone I am new to the forum, landed here after many google searches and can’t find an answer.

I’ve had my 1.6 2019 Skoda Octavia estate for 1 month now and whenever I full tank the diesel I can hear it “swooshing around” whilst I drive. When I come to a stop there’s a thud with the fuel.

when the fuel gets to about half a tank the noise gets quieter and then disappears after it’s under half a tank.

Has anyone experienced this before? If so was it normal or was there anything needing fixed?

I’ve owned an Octavia 2020 saloon and a 2018 superb estate in the past and have never heard the fuel move like I do in this Octavia estate.

any help is appreciated, cheers

My previous mkI diesel Superb did this when full - or just off full of diesel. Worried me when I first got it but it was nothing to worry about. I suspect most fuel tanks do it but what you hear in the cabin probably depends on soundproofing etc and your estate only has a flexible boot cover. I never hear it in my mkII petrol Superb twindoor.

A bit of reading for you.

Yup, there on my 2014 model 3 but for me it disappears after a 100km or so of fuel use.

First world problem.

Turn the radio up :)

Check that one of your doors or sills were not half full of water first, giving you the illusion of the swooshing tank, when it's one of those that could be swooshing.

Not manufacturer specific, but I've experienced this on a few vauxhalls in the past. Resolved by checking the door & sill drain holes.

It could also as you've suggested be the fuel in the tank.

Hello

The "Swooshing" noise can be from several reasons:

1. the coolant auxiliary pump.

Perhaps there is air in the cooling system or air leaking inside. I suggest that you put an eye on the coolant level after trips. Top up the coolant over the max line and see if the swooshing continues.

2. An old car battery causes the main coolant pump (which is switchable) not to operate well because the battery can't deliver enough current to operate the pump. This happened to me yesterday-i had swooshing for over a week and got the P0562 code (system voltage low). I replaced the car battery yesterday and the swooshing was gone.

3. Main coolant pump-If the pump is over 5 years of age, I recommend to replace it as a preventative maintenance step.

4. Door seals where the rubber is prevent water from draining. Need to unclog the opening.
