1.2 tsi oil filter

Featured Replies

Changed the oil the other day and the threaded bush came out with the oil filter. Luckily I noticed before I threw it in the bin. Should I screwlock it into the block or just keep an eye on it in fututre?

Unusual. Was the oil filter very tight/overtightened? What make and part no was it? Check the threads for damage, was the oil filter put on crossthreaded?

I don't know of screwlock that works in oil and would be frightened of it getting elsewhere in the lubrication system. I would just screw back in as tight as gloved fingers allow, it shouldn't be a problem as screwing on an oil filter should only tighten the fit. Check the thread and bottom of the mating part in the housing is clear and clean.

Interesting that its available as a seperate item.

"Loctite 263 Primerless, Oil Tolerant High Strength Red Threadlocker is designed for the permanent locking and sealing of threaded fasteners"

You'd have to make sure both insert and housing threads are perfectly clean of oil, use a clean rag soaked in brake cleaner. Apply a minimal amount of loctite on the filter housing threads only. Clean up thoroughly after refitting to remove any excess. There should be no loctite at all on exposed threads, you dont want to loctite the oil filter! Reoil the exposed thread to ensure new filter goes on smoothly. As per usual practice, apply a thin film of clean oil on the rubber seals and some oil on the mating threads of the oil filter. Don't overtighten.

As has been noted in other threads, make sure no other rubber seal has been left behind from the previous filter.

Filter was Mahle OC593/3 tightened to 20Nm. Every other oil filter I do is as tight as I can get it by hand but I understand it is a bit more critical on this engine.

When I took the filter off the bush was only in the filter a fraction of a turn as it was wobbling about. That's what initially drew my attention.

I must say I'm reluctant to use any solvent on there but I dare say brake cleaner would evaporate pretty quickly.
