Connecting an old Hitachi VCR to a Sony Bravia TV

Featured Replies

My brain hurts 😐

I've read stuff online, I've watched YT and I still don't know.

I'm trying to connect a Hitachi VCR to my Sony Bravia KD-49XF9005 TV.

I've seen one video of someone doing it with a coax aerial lead.  I've joined the VCR to the TV with Coax, but I can't work out for the life of me how to tell the telly to look at the Coax input plug 🙄

I've seen that I can go from scart (VCR) to an HDMI adapter and then from that to an HDMI input on the TV.  I've also read this won't work due to format issues.

I've also read I can go from scart to a three point RCA block (I've already got these 👍) but I'll then need to use a Sony specific adapter cable to go from three RCA's to the single 3.5mm socket that the TV has:

Anyone know for sure what'll work?

Wow, thanks for the speedy response @xman 👍

I'd been wallowing in my sense of failure, but will lay siege to it again after I've finished the washing up.

Make sure you connect coax to the correct antenna connections

VCR - Antenna Out

TV  - Antenna In

You need the correct male and female ends on the coax cable.

It worked!! 👍😎

Straightforward, even for a dimwit like me, once it's obvious.

Muchas gracias 🙏

Gaz basic method, using VCR , is to connect aerial to "in" socket of VCR and out socket of VCR to TV aerial in socket. Tune TV to stations, then tune tune TV to find VCR. You can then tune VCR to find TV stations and use VCR to select channel.

IF TV and VCR have a SCART socket, then I prefer tuning VCR and letting TV& VCR talk via scart

Xmans method of letting TV & VCR talk is good one.

Its simple to me, but that's my background.

Are there any VCRs that can decode digital Freeview transmissions not just old-style analogue (now turned off) transmissions?

Seems it's a bit of a faff and not worth bothering with.

I haven't heard of any, but simpler IMHO to use a cheap free view box with scarf to VCR.

@VWD I was pointing out that tuning a VCR to find TV stations isn't an option, as you now say yourself, as VCRs don't have digital tuners so using the VCR to select channel isn't going to work - you would need to select channel using the additional Freeview box.

Thread resurrection and suchlike...

I have a Panasonic DVD/VHS combo (DMR-EZ47 I think?) that does DVB receiving and recording to both VHS and DVD. It's up the loft I think. Quite a few of the later "last of the line" VHS VCRs will do DVB recording, although in terms of reliability they're a bit ****.
