My Mk 2 has a similar issue and that is what the fault code is saying on my VCDS - mechanical fault intermittent on the rear left. (probably caught it from teh new car lol) I took that to mean there is a fair chance it is getting an interrupted signal which may well be the magnetic strip on the back of the hub being partially perished. It came directly after a wheel change so perhaps that knocked a bit of the strip off. Anyways it is done now and hopefully tomorrow will be the last time that Superb is in the garage until teh next service. May do that myself though

Thanks for the explanation, that sounds plausible.

FYI the magnetic hub is an old wives tale, it is a castellated crown which interrupts the magnetic field of the magnet encased in the sensor this creates the pulsed signal to the electronics which in in simplified form you can imagine as being a reed switch which closes when within a magnetic field.

Might have guessed there would be another issue. Different garage, VAG specialist, for full service and timing belt. Got the dreaded call before they could have finished the job. Needs a new crankshaft seal. I presume that will be behind the timing belt so I dare say that could be viewed as lucky. Anyhows too busy to do today so picking up and awaiting to hear what they need to do and how much extra. Any ideas what I should expect. The timing belt was 575

My crankshaft seal was £104.21 + fitting. It was done as part of T/Belt, water pump, clutch pack, flywheel, DSG & Trans oils service in Dec last year. The fitting cost was lumped in with the 5hrs charged for the belt & pump replacement ( £250 )

Cheers

Just heard back from the garage,  they are quoting an additional 3 hours labour(6 total at £70 +vat per hour) and then the seal and sealant on top of that(£150 +vat). Total will end up just over a grand so another 450 quid or so I wasn't expecting. I think I have done about 20 miles in the car and my garage bills will be around £2500. To be fair looking at those for sale with similar spec and mileage and who have had their timing belt done recently it is around the same price taking into account the £2500 on top of buying price. Just to put a wee cherry on the top the front pads are also at 70% wear so that will be another wee job that needs doing soon but I spotted that when I first saw the car so expected that on the horizon. I've done a few cars front discs and pads so I will probably tackle that job myself and may stick discs on too as at least that will be a long time before I have to worry about discs and pads for a while, hopefully. I think the mechanic thought he was cheering me up when he said it was a good clean car.

Got the chance to do my first decent run in teh car today. I was photographing an event in Dumfries so 140 round trip on A roads. Only managed 51 mpg indicated on the way down but it is hilly and blowing a hoolie. On the way back it did 71 mpg so average over 60 which I was happy with and about the same as my Mk 2 1.6 estate.
