Convert RHD Citigo for EU use

Featured Replies

Hi!

I'm new to this site, and I was hoping you could give me some advice on my Skoda Citigo (2013). I'm moving to Germany soon, and the plan is to drive there and register the car. The car must therefore pass the German TUV within 6 months of my arrival.

First, I understand that the headlights need to be replaced. Does anyone have experience with taking these out yourselves? When I searched around it looks like the front bumper needs to come off, but it should be fairly straightforward I think.

Second, it seems that the Citigo only comes with a single rear fog light on the offside. To be EU compliant it needs either two rear fog lights or one on the other side. I had a quick look and I believe the Citigo has exactly the same light bulb, P21/4W, for the brake, tail and rear fog light. The difference comes down to wiring. On the offside I find six wires, on the nearside there are five. I therefore suspect the six wires are for tail, brake, indicator, reversing and fog light, plus ground. On the nearside, the wire for the fog light must be missing. So it should be possible to get two rear fog lights by connecting a single wire from the offside fog light to the nearside and get two fog lights. Has anyone attempted this? I tried searching around for a wiring diagram, but I couldn't find anything. I could probably get a voltmeter and figure out which wire is which through trial and error, but if anyone has done this before, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

All these jobs are easy, but changing the car to left-hand drive is not. :) I'd sell the car here and buy locally in Germany.
I'm sure some EU countries won't even let you re-register a used RHD car, and many have all sorts a taxes on self-imported cars (Italy I know does) - be very sure before you start messing with the car, and don't believe what some bloke from the pub reckons is the correct procedure.....

Says a bloke on a forum 🤣

Headlights easy, rear fog light easy, RHD to LHD probably a very big can of worms, possible for someone with the skills and determination but unlikely to be worth the effort and expenditure.

Vehicle registration requirements dont vary a lot between EU countries in the detail, RHD is still acceptable, a manufacturers European Certificate of Conformity will be required, you have covered headlights and rear fog light, speedo markings will need to be in kms but I think all UK market vehicles have both miles and kms.

Taxes are not specifically for self imported cars, they will be the same taxes for registering a vehicle supplied to the domestic market, what can surprise people is paying what they believe to be a new car tax on a second hand vehicle, they are not, it is a tax on first registration (in that member state) and would not be payable for subsequent owners.

Hi, thanks for your replies. To be clear, I was not planning on changing RHD to LHD, I believe only the headlights and rear fog lights are necessary. If you're saying these are easy jobs, I'm very relieved. Do you have any idea how the wiring in the rear lights work? I couldn't find any wiring diagrams...

Thanks!

But I'm not stating any facts, I'm suggesting it needs more investigation.

Just do it exactly as you described, remove the first original bulb if it throws up a bulb failure warning.
