Reg plate requirements

Featured Replies

I’m confused about driving in the EU now from UK

I know the reg plate needs to say UK with union flag, but does it have to be in a blue section or can the left section background be yellow/white?

You must display the UK identifier when driving a UK-registered vehicle abroad.

If your number plate includes the UK identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack), you do not need a UK sticker.

However, you will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate has any of the following:

  • a GB identifier with the Union flag
  • a Euro symbol
  • a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales
  • numbers and letters only – no flag or identifier

If you’re in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is on your number plate.

So the uk does not need to be on the plate itself.

Yeah I’ve seen that bit but no mention of blue coloured section, so I guess that means no requirement

Like for instance is this legal

Or this

I cannot find any rules that the section with the country identifier has to have a blue background

You have an identifier UK in both images and one flag above it which is correct.

So i would expect them to be legal assuming the tiny print on the plate identifies who supplied them.

I’m hopefully going to France at some point this year and I despise stick on or magnetic plates, so new reg plate the better option for me

I don’t trust online places to do plates so nearest will be Halfords and doesn’t look like you can select the UK bits online annoyingly, if they did I’d probably find the answer myself but thanks for letting me know

Apologies for my initial confusion, i thought you were asking if the blue bit of the plate with flags was compulsory.

There is no requirement to have anything other than the Registration number * on the plate.
