Driving with worn pads

Featured Replies

Out of no-where my brake pads have suddenly worn today :confused:

I guess they have anyway, sounds and feels like the pads have been replaced with brilo pads now when I brake, braking performance has reduced but not that much....

I am off for a bit of a trip this Thursday and Friday probably covering 500 miles plus...

Should I be worried?

Cheers

Er... Yes.

For peace of mind at least get them checked.

Brakes can save not only yourself, but others.;)

Tight git!

MR GRUMPY is correct , please get them checked out tomorrow A.S.A.P. the pad has probably just touched the lip on the disc but there wont be much friction material left on the pad if this is the case, you wouldn't want to wreck your new motor so soon after getting it

Bugger better get them checked tomorrow, times gunna be tight but I cant compromise the safety of me and others.

Good man,

You know it makes sense, and you would never forgive yourself if anything untoward happened.

We all may jest at times, but deep down safety MUST come first:thumbup:

If I never met you once because you spent money on making sure your car was safe, it's better than not meeting you ever because your brakes had failed:thumbup:

If that makes sense:confused:

It might just be a build up of rust on the disc if it has not been used for a day

or washed

Hi James

Easy enough to check pad wear on the '2. You can see the wear indicators ( the metal loops above the pads) through the wheels. If they start to touch the discs, they emit a scraping sound. TBH, the mileage you have on yours I am surprised if it is pad wear, but could be with heavy use. I found the discs on mine rust up really quickly if not used a day or two. Could also be a duff or damaged pad. Has to be checked either way.

Mine just had its 30.000 service and was advised to need new front discs and pads in another 2-3000 miles. I reckon they feel a bit past their sell by date Although still very effective) so will do them sooner. Toyota wanted

You're doing the right thing getting it checked - no brakes or brakes that are dodgy really could end up killing you and/or others.

Besides you probably wouldn't be able to enjoy the car with the 'are the brakes ok' nagging your mind.

Shouldn't cost too much to get it sorted though hopefully :)

Right the definently need doing, they are terrible tbh... :(

Its funny they really went from being fine to dead

Chris - I am that impressed with the standard MR2 brakes that I think I've killed the pads with lots of agressive braking lol

On a side note have you noticed how late the ABS kicks in? The wheels lock first then it kicks in

I'd be more worried about wrecking the disks than the car not stopping if the pads are worn, but still, get it looked at !

Yep, balls to safety if you score the disks it'll be a lot bigger bill at the garage!

Disks are at least twice the price of pads and yo need new pads with new disks, so that would be a bigger bill. And if you don't stop when you want to thats an even bigger bill :( Go grab some new pads and get it chewcked out.

Not sure about how well they run down. Mine feel like they are still stopping me well, but brake feel is changing slightly. The '2s discs have worn a bit oddly on the front, with the middle of the pad area well worn and the outer edges less so. A new set of both should sort it.

The ABS is more tuned to minimal stopping distance than trying to retain steering while braking, so it actually allows the tyres to run slower than road speed, but not completely locked. Got a mate to check it out from his Focus when I first got the car. He reckoned no lock up, but smoke off both front and rear tyres when observing a stop from somewhere a little above 70. I have not done a proper test of braking ability, but my mate in the focus (a 2L with 195s on) went sailing past me at quite a rate with his ABS on when we did the observed braking. Comparing with the Fabia, they are in a different world for feel and effectiveness.

A game I am yet to tire of it is watching passengers grab the seat squab and brace for impact coming up to a bend before I hit the brakes, as they think I have gone well past any chance of slowing down enough.

Funniest bit is there is still plenty more to come if in a real hurry.

Chris

And if you don't stop when you want to thats an even bigger bill :(

But at least the insurance will pick up the bill for the pads and discs (well assuming they pay up! ) :D

Chris

Just out of interest does anyone know how much of a 'lip' is acceptable on ones disks?

Mine are developing one & i've got about 18 months till my next service, so don't really want to leave them till then (i'm also too tight to pay some one to do something i'm perfectly capable of doing in a few hours)!

Any opinions greatly recived.

Oh and got the pads checked out............... Pictures to follow I think you will be shocked :D

Had to have the front pads and disc's changed, £171.77 :(

its not really the size of the lip thats the main concern , although this will of course contact the pad first when the pads are low , but the thinkness of the disc , you may have a lip but the disc could still be above the manufacturers minimum thickness measurement , iirc the minimum thickess measurement is cast into the disc on the hub centre inside the wheel bolt holes

Thanks for that Ric i'll have to get measuring!

Yes , if you run with disks that are too thin they will overheat and warp.

If the disks are plenty thick enough but have a bit of a lip on them then it's not out of the question get get the file out :D

Minimum thickness is 19mm for ventilated discs on diesel-engined Octavias according to Autodata CD2.
