I have a Fabia VRS and am interested in an Octavia 2.0tdi (bigger boot is the main reason).

What are the differences between these 2 engines other than size, BHP , torque ?

The 2 liter one is apparently smoother in delivery as well.

There will be an Octavia Mk2 vRS diesel version but that's gonna be at the end of the year (or thereabouts at least) in the UK

The 2.0 TDI is a 16 valve lump and the turbo lag is reduced too I think. The engine is also quieter once run in.

Test drive one. I think you will be impressed.

The main things I've noticed about the 2.0 TDI (driven a VW Jetta & SEAT Leon) are they are eager to rev more than the 1.9 TDI, but lack the mid range punch of the 1.9 TDI.

September time for ordering a VRS TDI Octy seems to be the general noise around dealers.

The torque delivery is better across the rev range, there is more oomph at higher revs than the 1.9 unit, there is also more available power at lower revs (1200 and above).

The 1.9 litre unit seemed to deliver everything at about 2500 rpm, I drove a 1.9 PD130 before and it seemed to be faster than my current 2.0TDI engine but when you run some benchmark tests on regular bits of road it isnt the case.

IMO i think the 1.9 unit sounds much better than the 2.0.

Agree with that. One other thing in my experience of the 2 is that the 1.9 feels a lot "looser" and eager to rev. But overall the 2.0 is a smoother more refined engine with a better spread of torque across the range.

If I was going for a smaller car with a sporty feel I'd want the 1.9 (e.g Fabia or Ibiza), if I was going for a larger exec/motorway cruiser sort of car (e.g. Octy, Golf, Superb) I'd go for the 2.0.......

Yeah thats the way I would go too, the 1.9 PD gives you a real boot up the 'arris but the 2 litre is a more refined lump.

If you get the revs right and lift off quickly, the 2 litre delivers a nice "pishhh" from under the bonnet:D

Tis a company car so a tuning box is about as brave as I get.

It could amount to an interesting conversation with my boss and a downgrade to a Berlingo.

Seriously, if I could get away with it, I would love to remap the 2 litre lump.

Get the revs right in the 2.0 and its very entertaining. It's mental if you take off quick from standstill and ESP is a godsend. Again for rapid (and i mean really rapid) overtaking, you need to get the revs right to make the most of the torque but what a joy to drive.

I'll be making a point of test driving the 170 version when its launched here although the reports so far would indicate its a bit quicker to 60 than the 140 but isn't much better in the midrange department. It's also reported to be even more peaky thant the 140 which i'm not sure i'd like.

I'm still used to the style of the old engine and I am still trying to alter my driving characteristics to suit the new engine, I'll have it sussed pretty soon.

Yes the Vauxhall diesels are fantastic, no argument there although i'll reserve judgement on how good it is over a VW PD. Will the Astra still be on the road running sweet at 150, 200 or even 300k miles?

Maybe not, but who cares I will have a new car long before that sort of mileage.

The Pug/Citroen Dervs were certainly the best derv burners out there around the time of the XUD and XUDT, nothing could touch them. The 1.7 and 2.1 made it into BMW's as the 318 and 325tds, into rovers, into both pugs and citroens and many other cars. That was the diesel to have, the 1.9 turbo was a stunner and the 2.1 turbo was fantastic to drive :) Nothing, nothing , nothing to 1800rpm, hear the turbo spining up and at 2000rpm you got flung into the back of the seat. If you had been trundling around in top the **** that had made you floor it got a nice cloud of black soon too. Oh the fun memories - lol

Now the HDI is a lovely engine and great for eating up motorway miles, but like nearly all moder diesels they drive like a petrol engine :( I think that is where the VW engines excel, they still drive like a diesel with bags of torque, although the 1.9 is more derv like than the 2.0.

Has anyone driven the 2.7TDI that is in the Audi A6, i saw one in the work car park on an 06 and wondered what it is like.

For not caring about the engine lasting 150k, thats all fine and good, but it means you get less when you sell it on due to reputation, and also little things break earlier, so that you may find a big bill at say 80-100k :(

Saying that there were plenty of old citroen BX's with 200-300k miles on them and well what about the reputation citroen have.

I've been in one. Very nice and loads of power but the words 'poor man's 3.0' come to mind. Call me a snob.

Hows about the 2.7litre twin turbo diesel in the new 407 coupe and Jag S-type etc?

It's supposed to be a fantastic engine.

As for oldies, does anyone remember the 1.7TD Isuzu sourced diesel in the cavalier and astra? It was a country mile better than Vauxhalls own 1.7TD at the time.

And as for VAG not producing the worlds best diesels, how about the latest LeMans car?

And the V10TDI with 750NM of torque.

Not forgetting the new 4.2TDI V8 in the Audi A8 (335BHP and 650NM of torque :eek: )

The Vauxhall CDTI engines were developed with FIAT and are made in Italy so only time will tell if they are as reliable as the VAG PD units.

IIRC the 1.7 diesel unit only had 82bhp. Maybe a low pressure turbo was fitted. I suppose when it was introduced that was very good for a 1.7 diesel but why Vauxhall used it for so many years is beyond me. Reliability was good but performance not on a par with with others.

I could have had a 150 Vectra instead of the Skoda. Test drove it and it wasn't as nice to drive and was only as quick mid-range as my 130 TDCi Mondeo. Its the best engine Vauxhall have had, no doubt, but would you really want an italian engine for the reliability worries ??

And you can drive the 2.0TDi like a petrol with the gear ratios - will the Astra do 80 in 3rd and 105 in 4th ??
