Running it in....

Featured Replies

After a long wait, my new Octavia Estate 1.9Tdi is just a few days away. I can`t wait to get it!

Thanks to many people here for helping me make up my mind regarding which engine to go for.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some helpful advice when it comes to running it in ( I believe that`s what it`s called in English)

What is the best way do run the car in to make sure that it performs well in many years to come? I have heard that if not done correctly, one might experience that the engine uses alot of oil, does not perform fully etc.

All help is much appreciated!

Just take it easy for the first 1500 miles.

Suppose if you want to keep it sweet for many years to come, and the diesel engine quiet, then keep those revs quite far from the limiter! In my RS the tempation is hard though.

Most new engines dont need running in, but i like to hold off from a bit!

My view on this is in this This thread. (Bottom of page)

My technique? A maximum of 50% of max revs for the first 250 miles, add 250-500 rpm for each of the next 250 miles. Don't use constant throttle, don't labour the engine (full throttle at low revs) give it full throttle sometimes to help loosen (but watch your revs).

I keep my cars for at least 100k miles, most I've done on an original engine is 275,000 before selling it, so I'm doing something right.....

I've taken to giving the car to SWMBO to potter around in. The temptation is too great for me to drive it every day

Just drive as normal, unless you are one of those red liner nuts, it will take about 9-10,000 miles before you notice any real change in the engine note and free revving.

With a diesel you want to use all the torque, but not all the revs.

For the first 500 miles keep the revs below 3000rpm, but try and get there quickly. From 500 to 1000 miles, keep it under 3500rpm, but again, you can put the pedal to the floor to get to those revs.

It works even better if you have a caravan on the back or a boot full of bricks, but I made do without either.

I agree with Sooty. I kept to under 3000 for the first 600 miles and then gradually extended the range and didn't thrash it till 1000. Done 2500 now and still loosening up.

Sooty, have you still got your Griff?

Mine only really loosened up properly at around 15k miles.

Yes, still got the Griff. Running atm, but I doubt that'll last long - it never does. :P

I know how you feel - mine is going in for it's annual 1500 quid fleecing, er, I mean service next week.
