Retrofit phone cooling whilst using Android Auto

Featured Replies

Heyo everyone,

I have been enjoying my infotainment system over the last few months and one thing that kept bothering me was that my phone was getting way too hot. I've noticed this when stopping to refuel, the thing feels like a frying pan. On my last trip this weekend I've even started getting notifications in Android Auto myself saying I should move the phone to a cooler place.
This has happend on my previous phone (Pixel 6) and it also happens on my Pixel 8. Removing the case didn't solve it either. My phone usually lies behind the cupholders (so basically under the USB port) but I have also tried putting it in the storage compartment behind the gearshifter/under the handbrake. This also did not help 😞. Using Android Auto wirelessly and I've already tried the 'software tricks' such as closing down all apps etc. My car is a 2018 Fabia Clever edition.

I understand that the phone will get hot when it is using GPS and 5G, and forwarding that all into an Android Auto interface. Still, it should not be that the phone is basically throtteling and that even the AA interface is getting sluggish.

Now I've also seen alot of newer cars (including Skoda's I think) that have a dedicated phone cooling pad to prevent this from happening. Is there any way to retrofit something similar? I was thinking of the compartment underneeth the USB/aux port.  My question: does anyone have any ideas/have tried something like this? Getting a phone holder for one of the air vents will make it that I can't access my phone (when opting for the left/right vent) or that I can't see my screen (when using the middle ones)

Thanks alot!

Just to add, I just saw how modern cars implement this and basically they redirect some air from the cars AC system to the spot where you should put your phone.

I just have a phone holder mounted on the cooling vent so it gets "some" coolish air (yes Im aware that if i turn the heating up that will warm it but as I typically leave the temp set at 18c all year around then meh
