anyone know if it is possable to fit Audi tt twin intercoolers on a vrs as in cupra r??

Yes, but you would need the TT inlet manifold so the throttle body is on the correct side.

but would it be worth the effort?

I'd rather have a front mount for similar price (once you take in to account the price of a manifold)

Could possibly work out cheaper (than an aftermarket FMIC) if you sourced a rolled/rear ended TT though.

Don't know if twin SMiC set-up is more efficient than a FMIC.

Also got to wonder why tuning companies go with a FMIC rather than just adding another SMIC and the relevant inlet manifold.

Possibly because people dont ask them to do it ?

You know what its like "Mr X has this on his car so I want it too" - there are very few modding pioneers, like jason.

....when AmD used to do the K04 transplant they used the twin SMIC set-up.

Personally I don't think you get as much air through to the SMICs compared with one in the front.

As to why FMIC is not fitted as standard....for TT, CupraR it's probably cheaper just to plumb in another SMIC.

And you have to ask why when tuning TT, S3 and Cupra R owners change the twin SMIC's for a FMIC..lol.

"Side Mount Intercoolers (vs Front Mount Intercoolers)

Efficiency. Capacity. Air Flow

As the act of compressing the intake charge creates heat, and the key to engine performance is a cool intake air temperature, the importance of effective intercooling is paramount. Also, because the close proximity of the neighboring cylinders makes even a stock VW VR6 a rather hot running engine, the importance of maximizing cooling efficiency is even more important.

It is often assumed that a Front Mount Intercooler (FMIC) is superior to a Side Mount Intercooler (SMIC) but this is not necessarily the case.

First and foremost, using SMICs will not obstruct the flow of air through the radiator. While a FMIC may do a good job of properly cooling the boost intake charge, however this occurs at the expense of restricting cool air flow through the radiator, and is therefore counter productive.

Secondly, while it is true that OEM SMIC have a smaller core volumetric capacity when compared to a typical FMIC, when used in a dual mount configuration (as on HPA’s higher output turbo systems), the total capacity is increased twofold.

Example:

Stock GTi 1.8T intercooler: 3.57L / 218 in3

Competitor’s FMIC 5.07L or 309.4 in3

Dual Stock GTi 1.8T intercooler: 7.14L / 436 in3

Thirdly, the large amount of piping required for a FMIC (particularly when paired with a factory intake manifold) causes a slowing in spool up time, equivalent to 300 to 500 rpm lag behind a single SMIC."

So if I get this right - using two SMIC's is better than a FMIC?

How easy/difficult is it to pipe it in? I heard that someone here on Briskoda has done this - anyone know who, how they did it, and was it good?

I wonder what the OEM SMIC costs from Skoda (or from a salvage yard)? Must be cheaper than a new custom FMIC.

Repeat both Pikey mods on the side of the new SMIC and Bob's your uncle!
