Fuse box not matching up with diagram

Featured Replies

Hi, I've got a 2011 Mk2 Octavia, the rear windscreen wiper isn't moving. Before replacing the motor I looked to see if the fuse for it had blown or been removed in the dash fuse box (driver's side, not behind the glove compartment. Looking in the manual, the rear wiper fuse position is 41, but space 41 itself appears to not be functional or assigned, the fuse just falls straight out of it.

To add to the confusion, certain fuses appear to be fitted to active positions for items not fitted to the car, such as a fuse in the electric sunroof position. So the manual appears to differ from the car itself. Does anyone have a 2011 Mk2 Octavia diagram I can check it with, or know why the position for a fitted component isn't assigned? It's baffling me.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've just looked a the Mk2 manual on the Skoda Website and instead it shows the rear wiper fuse as position 18m one of the smaller ones. Again this doesn't appear to be assigned, I can't see metal connectors in it and the manual doesn't tell you what amp fuse it takes, these little ones appear to be 5 or 10 only. Any ideas?

Thanks, yes just found this. Problem is the fuse position doesn't appear to be active, nor does it tell me what amp fuse it is. Also my fuse box is reversed to that one, it goes from left to right.

Apologies, it runs from right to left. I've just tried fuse position 18, it's inactive, fuse just wobbles in it. 14 and 19 appear to be active but you can't get a fuse into them, 17 is active with no fuse. So position 18 can't be it, because it's not an active slot. The plot thickens.

No description available.

I am not sure there is a fuse. It may be fed directly from the centrol control module.

So I looked at my 2011 build estate and it is exactly as in your photo - no FS18

I assume you wanted to check the fuse as a first step in finding out why it is not working.

Rear wiper failure frequently comes up in this forum. Do a search to see what others have found.

The most common failure on the hatch is caused by the fact that washer fluid is fed through the centre of the wiper shaft. Corrosion can damage the bearing or fluid leaks into the unit.

On the estate, it more likely to be the motor itself as it has a dedicated fluid jet above the rear window.

Mine (estate) failed due to sticking brushes in the brush holders. It is a design fault. As the spring pressure on the brush  reduces as the brushes shorten with wear, the spring can longer press the brush against the comutator. I fixed mine by slightly sanding the sides of the brushes so they were able to move up and down the holders freely.

Most people just change the wiper unit.

Have you correctly identified fuse position 41, @EHeath?

Bottom row of full size blade fuses, 2nd from right?

Thanks, I can't see a fuse for it, the positions simply aren't active. Not sure why both Skoda manuals and the Haynes are so wrong about this.

On the smaller fuses, the positions are numbered. 18 is inactive, 19 next to it is but doesn't have a fuse in it.

But 41?

You said in your first post that you'd looked there,  but I think that was before you realised that LHD/RHD diagrams were different.

This is what I've been working from: image.thumb.png.94bdbfadf24a49a0f8fdb5c6d1768875.pnghowever in my box it runs from right to left (21 is where 22 is, then 20 (23), 19 (24), etc.

image.thumb.png.8c943a9b7add978e5d5aed5cfb2ba6d5.png as you can see the numbers are running right to left.

On the row you mentioned, 41 should be 2nd from left, but the entire row except 3rd from right and the 2 with fuses in them on the right are inactive and don't have contacts, the one that is active, 43, appears to be for the sunroof, which isn't installed on my vehicle.

No, for RHD 41 is 2nd from right, where there is a blue 15A fuse.

Hang on, I think I've got my left and rights wrong, 41 should then be where 44 is, which has a 15 amp fuse in it.

Just realised I had my rights and lefts mixed up. Found tried a few fuses and no luck, so the motor's dead.

Just for completeness here is my method of getting the fuse position right.

Sit sideways on the drivers seat and hold up a mirror that reflects the fuse location at the end of the end of the dash. The reflection in the mirror then looks like the diagram for a LHD car, as shown in handbook.

There is a lot more to this! The fuse arrangement for the rear wiper on my 2012 Mk 2 HB Octavia does not match any of the information provided in this forum.

Here's what AI told me which eventually get me to the right answer:

"On face-lifted 2012 Skoda Octavia Mk2 models, your rear wiper is actually controlled by Fuse 40 (a 10 Amp red fuse), rather than position 41.

The official Skoda owner manuals for 2011–2013 cars frequently feature a misprint that incorrectly points to position 41. If you look into your slot 41, you will likely notice that it completely lacks the internal metal pins needed to hold a fuse in place, causing any fuse you try to insert to simply fall straight out. [12]

Check the row right next to it:

The Correct 2012 Fuse Configuration

  • Fuse 40: Rear Windscreen Wiper (Red 10A Fuse).

  • Fuse 41: Empty / Not Assigned (No metal contact pins inside).

  • Fuse 42: Rear Windscreen Washer Pump (White/Clear 15A or Blue 15A Fuse). [123]"

But then, when I told AI that there is no fuse or fuse carrier in position 40, I got this:

"On 2012 Skoda Octavia models utilizing the alternative interior layout, your rear windscreen wiper is powered by Fuse 18 (a 15 Amp blue fuse). [12]

Because Skoda completely overhauled the central electrical control unit during the late Mk2 face-lift production run, the fuse boxes on 2012 vehicles can vary wildly from what is printed in the car's original handbook. [12]

The Alternative 2012 Layout

Locate Fuse 18 in your interior dashboard fuse panel:

  • Fuse 18: Rear window wiper (Blue 15A Fuse)."

This turned out to be correct for my car.

(if only the sticker attached to the removable panel covering the dashboard fusebox had the correct info, instead of telling me the rear wiper fuse was in position 41. Nice one Skoda!)

Note that on some variants, including mine, the washer pump is powered through the Body Control Module (BCM) and it doesn't have an individual fuse
