Skoda Felicia 1.6 litre AEE engine Timing Belt change interval

Hi guys,

I have Skoda Felicia combi with the 1.6 litre AEE engine, i drive about 5000km per year, i have changed the Timing Belt (Continental brand) 4 years ago and have only driven about 10,000 km in those 4 years and i checked the Timing Belt and it looks fine with no cracks or anything,

 

So now I want to know when should i change the Timing belt  km/years and if i dont drive much, how many years can i wait before changing it ???

Turn the belt with your hand, if there are no cracks leave it.

Pay attention to the noise, in videos they mention it as ''squeaking noise'', do you hear something like this?

there is no noises and there is no cracks it all works fine ...

but i want to know the recommended km/years change interval ....... 

If i rememeber correct Skoda says for Pulley belt (Poly-V) in 5 years.

Buy a quality one, not a 6-7 euro VIKA.

Whether it's correct or not I don't know Auto-Doc has -

"The interval on the AEE 1.6 8v engine used to be based purely on a visual inspection of condition but now it is accepted that the interval is 60K miles or 5 years.  On these engines it is not usually the belt that fails but rather the lower plastic tensioner.  The water pump should also always be changed and a timing belt kit used.  These are very easy belts to do and the job should take a professional no more than 3 hours."https://www.volkswagenforum.co.uk/threads/cambelt-or-chain.3518/

So perhaps that bears out what Crasher put and it's not the belt (depending on its quality) but the lower plastic tensioner.

 

You could check with the supplier or manufacturer of the last belt you fitted but it may only apply to the belt unless it was a kit.

 

German engines seem to be a real PITA with regards water pumps, and now tensioners perhaps.

My timing belt brand is Continental, i dont drive much km , my timing belt is intalled 4 years ago and only driven 10,000 km,

 

So i will change the belt every 5 years from the date of installation.

Do you mean 5 years from the date of installation ??

That's a good brand.

Yes, that is what Skoda suggests, me i believe in personal test mainly (sound, cracks).

So Skoda suggests to change the Timing belt every 5 years from the date of Installation..

Yes but it's not mandatory, mine lasted about 7 years.

If yours is in good condition keep it another year at least.

I have mentioned above it is a Skoda Felicia Combi with the 1.6 litre AEE engine...

@Mustafa_Samir : I presume your engine starts nornally and has not symptoms of luck of power, since you don't see any wear signs and you hear no noise (as we with the Pulley Belt) you are not in danger.

As a precution in the next service or engine repair install a new one Timing Belt and you would be OK. :thumbup:

I was quoting @D.FYLAKTOS who's confusing timing belt with auxiliary belt.

 

AEE is an interference engine, which means that snapped belt will lead to rather expensive damage. So keep factory service intervals.

Some of the signs of a faulty Timing Belt.

Same bad signs as for 1.3 which has a Pulley Belt (and Timing Chain).

5 years for the Timing Belt too.
