My car is throwing black smoke (soot) from exhaust. This started after a mechanic opened the alternator to replace a broken bolt.

Consulted another mechanic and he said the EGR has got choked and needs to be cleaned.

What in your opinion can be the reasons for the issue?

Need suggestions from experienced owners or knowledgeable technicians here.
