Octavia mk3 SE L wheel and tyre options

Featured Replies

Greetings fellow octavia enthusiasts.

I've recently bought a 2017 Octavia 1.4 TSI SE L

It has nice alloys and newish tyres although they are a non descript brand.

The tyres are 225 / 45 / 17 and I'm finding the ride a little harsh compared to my last Octavia which was the SE model and had tyres with bigger sidewalls. Doesn't help with local roads being totally knackered.

Just wondered if anyone had experienced this and either changed out the tyres for a higher profile or just swapped the alloys. Some of the superb alloys look nice but not sure if they are the same stud pattern and how I would let the car know it was running on a different wheel or tyre size so as to maintain speedo accuracy etc. Failing that swapping the tyres for a decent brand could help.

Many thanks for any input 👍

One of the main reasons I went for the SE spec, as it came with 205/55 16's from standard, slightly more compliant ride, bigger, cheaper tyre choice, too. I also went for the lower spec, as wanted less tech gizmos, inc lane assist. Downgrading your tyres & wheels wouldn't be a difficult job, if that was the route you wanted to take. More meat on the tyres would give you slightly better comfort over potholes, no matter what make you put on.

I do prefer the extra comfort of the SEL seats, but I wouldn't go to the effort to swap mine.

It looks like you've got the below Trius alloy rims.

All the standard Octavia MK3 tyre sizes have about the same outside diameter, so the speedo isn't affected by whichever size you fit...whether that's 195/65R15, 205/55R16, or 225/45R17, etc.

205/55R16 fitted to a 6.5Jx16 ET46 5/112 57.1 would be a good alternative to 225/45R17.

Notice that the below 16" steel rims weighs a lot less than the alloy rims.

An alternative to the 6.5Jx16 ET46 5/112 57.1 steel rim, is the 6Jx16 ET48 5/112 57.1 which is a winter tyre rim, but could be used all year round. Yet another alternative, is a non-standard 6Jx16 ET43 5/112 57.1 steel rim (from the Karoq). This has 3mm less offset than the ET46 rim, so will move the centre of the tyre 3mm further out in the wheelarch. A 3mm difference from the standard offset is only a small difference. A Karoq owner recently went the other way, and choose ET46 over his standard ET43 offset, ie. he moved the centre of his tyres 3mm further into the wheelarch.

I suspect the below wheel trim would fit the 6Jx16 ET43 5/112 57.1 steel rim (from Karoq), even though it's sold to fit the 6Jx16 ET48 5/112 57.1 steel rim (winter steel rim from Octavia MK3). Notice that this wheel trim has 14 spokes, which is the same as the number of air holes (to cool the brakes) in the steel rim.

I have some velorum with half decent tyres, quite a soft ride and low noise. Looking to change them though as want something bigger.
