Effect of ambient temperature on 1.8T?

Featured Replies

All cars feel different when it's warm, but has anybody quantifiably measured the reduction in torque in hot ambient conditions with a standard SMIC?

I don't think the 20v Turbos are to badly affected by hotter temperatures.

The old 1.4 8v engine on the Fabia's seems to suffer terribly!

I have not measured it but the trusty a$$ dyno says that the car is down on power in hot weather ;)

Do you know by how much?

I doubt it is very much.

OMG,

I was going to make a post about that. Im Glad someone else has noticed. Does anyone know why it particularly affects this engine badly and what can be done to stop it.

Hot air is less dense, less oxygen means less power.

Move to a colder country.

I don't understand the phyics behind why it is particulary bad on this engine, maybe an induction system with a venting system from the grille to the filter would help slightly?

I'd go to Sweden but the Beer is too expensive:P

Everything is expensive in Sweden and Norway...

I'm going there next year! Driving actually...

as a rough rule of thumb, every degC increase in Inlet Air Temperature could cost 0.5bhp.

So the elevated ambient temperatures combined with the tiny intercooler that these cars use as standard, could be generating substantial inlet air temperatures.

This effect is compounded by the behaviour of the Engine Management above a certain level, say 60degC inlet air temp, when it's likely to start retarding ignition timing and even reducing boost pressure to reduce the potential for detonation.

Cheers.

Does anybody know what typical intake temperatures under various conditions are? Re-mapped, temperature increase across the turbo could be substantial

My old normally-aspirated Focus seemd to be affected more by the ambient temperature. It was probably just more evident as the maximum torque wa so much less than in the vRS.

I did a 'pikey' vent mod a few months ago, which will presumably help matters when the car is on the move.
