All,

I am new to the forum and ths is a great place - Defo check this out more often

I have a 1.4 8v 2000 model with 27k miles. The car was my brother in laws and I know he looked after it from new.

The car window got smashed when I was away and the alarm went off for ages - To the point where I had to jump start the car.

The jump start worked and ever since then I have seen the following:

First the power steering light came on and then went off

Now its on all the time - I have checked my battery at the garage and he said it was fully charged...Whether I believe him or not is a different story.

I spoke to the dealer who basically treated me like crap - Said he couldnt look at the car for 4 weeks as he is fully booked and worse, is certain that the whole pump needs replaing and wants a sizeable deposit to even look at it becuase he knows he will need to replace the pump -

Power steering is run from the battery ( no fluid but needs a good battery ) and I think the radio gets it code from the ECU when it is reconnected

The power steering system DOES use fluid, however it uses an electric pump rather than a mechanical one.

Id get the faut codes checked on the steering system first and go from there. If it has the older plastic ended PAS sensor id certainly change that providing the fluid level is ok.

So if the battery is removed does the radio code need to be re entered and will the immobiliser lose syunc with the key fob

Radio may loose its code, immobilizer deffo wont.

Nope will all go back on as normal as code is stored in ECU, and if sync is lost its very easily fixed. But i've had a batt disconnected on Fabia for three months and its never lost sync.

If the battery is disconnected the radio code will need entering, however the radio code system might not have been activated for your set. You know the cars history so I would have thought that you will have all the necessary codes, so it shouldn't be a problem. The immobiliser and remote locking are two separate things, the immobiliser will not be affected and the worst that the remote locking can do is go out of synchronisation with the car. The owners handbook and radio handbook should contain all the imformation that you need.

Wont radio show safe then code itself via car without the need for entering code... thats what ours have always done??

On all the cars I've owned (Fabia included) the radio code needs re-entering if the battery is disconnected for an hour or more, as do the 1-touch windows..... Key fobs still work just fine though :D

Hi,

Ruchard put my car on the VAG - Com and we found teh following code :

10043

10048

Unfortunately the power steerign is still faulty - and the code reset did not fix it

Any idea what the above coes mean??

They should tell you what they relate to, what was the rest of the code/description?

ah crap.... didnt write the whole lot down. sorry thought all you needed was the codes.

I dont know, half a job...tut.

Are these codes likely to show up on the next dealer test - if they were clered with the VAG tool>?

If they were cleared, they are unlikely to show up, unless it's a permanent/intermittent fault and the problem occurs again :D

Hi,

The fault code showing on the 2000 fabia is in fact a 18048 and 18043 code and not 10083 / 10043 as previously said.

These codes were cleared and did not return - however the power steering is sill not working -

Please please can some onelend a hand and describe the next steps

I simply cant take the car into a Skoda dealer as I dont get time off and he wants four weeks to book it in

Thanks

I should say that I am almost certain that this was directly related to the window smashed and the battery going flat and having to get jump started.

At the dealers they said that no comm with the pump could be made....

I ve checked the fuse inside the car and the fuse under the battery ..... They are both fine

Was wondering if there was a switch between the pump and the steering rack .... which might have got short circuted, but to be honest I wonder why the fuse did not blow if that was the case....

Help much appreicated :)

After a lot of diggin round I ve located a black switch box that the power steering pulgs into - Any way of easily testing this without using VAG COM ... As VAG COM cant communicate with my power steering unit...

Any thoughts?
