245vrs engine rattle

Featured Replies

Good evening all.

Great news - the car passed its MOT this morning!! 👍

Then this afternoon on my drive home from work I have noticed a loud rattle from the engine. Probably most obvious at around 1500 - 2500 rpm. Definitely related to engine rpm. Sounds like a dry valve follower or like the engine oil is low.

Checked engine oil and its sat at around 3/4 mark. I have actually pallned to do an oil change this weekend as its about half wat between dealer intervals.

When I got home I popped the bonnet and listened. The noise seems to be coming from the front of the engine/ intake area.

Would anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what this might be? 🤔

Thanks in advance.

Get somebody to rev it with the bonnet open check every is tight check.Has it lost any power or any warning lights

Today I went to change the oil. Car was sat running with engine flush prior to oil change. The engine cut out randomly.

Seems the rattle was a failing chain/ guide/ tensioner.

Engine is now locked up. Looking like a failed chain.

Big repair bill heading my way.

Absolutely gutted. Seriously thinking about getting shot once repaired. 🙄

You were on the money with your desire to change the oil but shot yourself in the foot by using the even thinner engine flush.

A modern thin synthetic detergent oil changed at twice the scheduled interval will not have left deposits requiring an engine flush, I would go as far as to say on modern engines with modern oils there is never a case for their use unless you have bought a vehicle with no service history and the old oil drained out is gellified or contaminated.

The damage might have been done on initial start up with the flushing oil where the tensioner will not have been extended until oil pressure built up and the chain jumped during that time, if that is the case it would have been even more likely to happen had you gone straight to the refill with the new oil being a bit thicker and also having drained the filter housing.
