Tyre quandary

Featured Replies

Have a 2020 KAROQ scout that I am less than impressed with and want to improve the ride - currently on 225/45r19 with crater wheels

can I increase the aspect ratio to 50 - still using the same wheels

Am no boy racer so sharp handling not a priority

Welcome.

Maybe do a simply search and you will find many similar threads.

One of the problems with the 225/45R19 tyre size on the Karoq 4x4 is that Skoda have fitted them to relatively wide 8" rims, which makes the ride noticeably harder than if they had fitted this tyre size to narrower 7J rims.

However, even if you fitted the 225/45R19 tyres to 7J rims the improvement in ride would still be no where near the improvement that you could get by going to smaller diameter rims such as 16" with higher tyre sidewalls.

One non-standard option is 7Jx16 ET45 5/112 57.1 from the Yeti and either standard Karoq 4x4 225/60R16 tyres  or slightly bigger 235/60R16. One advantage of the 235/60R16 compared to 225/60R16 is that they are a much cheaper tyre size.

Here's a non-standard option below, but there are many other possible options...some standard, some non-standard. As well as being far more comfortable than any 19" option, this 16" option provides lots of rim protection from kerbing damage because the tyres' sidewalls bulge out by about 19mm each side. By comparison, the sidewalls on a 225/45R19 fitted to an 8J rim only bulge out by about 2mm each side...which is tiny...so this wheel is very vulnerable to kerbing damage.

Notice in the chart below, that the outside diameter of the 225/45R19 and 235/60R16 tyre sizes are almost the same, ie. a 0.5% difference is insignificant.

Outside diameter of tyre

225/45R19 685.1mm

235/60R16 688.4mm (0.5% bigger outside diameter compared to 225/45R19)

As you can see in the ETRTO (European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation) chart below, a 235/60R16 can be fitted to a 7J rim width.

ETRTO approved rim widths for passenger car tyres
235/60R16 6.5-7.0-8.5

The below photos show a Yeti with 225/50R17 and 235/55R17 tyres. 235/55R17 has a similar outside diameter to 235/60R16.
