Steering wheel not straight – wheel alignment unsuccessful

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Recently purchased a Scala 1.0 TSI SE L DSG (2021) with circa 26,000 miles. Full service history and bought from a Skoda Used Approved dealer. Noticed from the outset that the steering wheel is skewed to the right when driving the car in a straight line. I didn't think it would bother me too much at first (wrong..) so took the car to a local 'reputable' wheel/tyre garage who checked the alignment on their Hunter Hawkeye machine. They made some adjustments (see attachment) but the issue with the steering wheel was not any better (if anything, it felt slightly worse).

I returned to the garage this week who put the car back on the machine but it showed all the alignment measurements were within tolerance, and the steering wheel was centred inside using their jig. Tyre pressures all okay. They shrugged their shoulders and said there wasn't much more they could do.

Welcome views on next steps , what the underlying issue could be and whether to:

  • Seek a second opinion from a different garage.
  • See if Skoda will look at it under warranty (one year's coverage as part of the approved used package).

Thanks in advance.

Spoken to the dealer? The cars under warranty

Have you checked that you don't have a brake dragging?  Are any of the wheels hot to the touch after a drive (probably on the left hand side if you are having to steer to the right)?

The car should have gone no place other than back to the Skoda Main Dealership network since a Skoda Approved Used car.

Then they could have employed competent people to correct the fault.

It had supposedly had 'Rigorous Check's pre sale.   'Multi Point Vehicle Checks' Carried out by partially deaf blind and full blown daffties.

Now that is an issue since it has been to others.

Does the vehicle veer to one side if the steering wheel is released?

To avoid any road camber influence repeat the test driving straddling the middle of the road where safe to do so -  in a place with good visibility and no oncoming vehicles

  • 3 weeks later...

if the car goes straight and the wheel alligment is ok , i would take the steering wheel of an place it correctly.

Maybe the steering wheel has been taken off at some time and not placed correct when reassembled

  • 1 year later...

Do you have lane assist ? Maybe the steering sensor zero point needs calibrating - had the same symptoms on a different brand car, got it to the dealer and they fixed it.
