Selling a car private

Featured Replies

Not an advert...

Long story short got too many cars trying to consolodate.
Had my Jimny in for service and mot and ended up with a big bill just over £900 (major service, MOt and some front suspension work).
Trade in figures for that car seem to be way off to me. Getting offered £9k with them sitting on some forecourts at £15k+  with more miles than mine.

I've never sold private, is it awful? Best places to do it?
Likely to get a lot more than the trade in anyway, just coz those cars are listed at £15k doesn't mean they would sell after all.

Jimny,s sell for pretty high prices used.  Crazy in some instances.   Forget dealers trading in offers as they rub their hands in glee at getting one in.   My last one I wanted shifted went to Arnold Clark as I knew it needed lots.  They doubled what I paid putting it to auction then in the traffic it resold a couple of times with crazy asking prices.    My loss but I wanted it away quick...   Just be prepared to get visited by some real dodgy geezers if selling from home.  Also expect a visit later in the middle of the night.

Sit it in a super market car park with a For Sale sign. Near the Disabled Bays.  Just a phone number.  Maybe sit near in car and see just how much interest there is.

Disables bays? It's not an auto?

Actually saw an auto listed on autotrder. £20k for a 66 plate which is crazy

@Aspman Not necessary to be an Auto, not all disabled drivers or passengers need an auto. Some just easy in and easy out.

& Many a district nurse or carer want a Jimny.

Short end to this tale.

I was talking to a couple of dealers both with similar cars.
Spoke to second dealer late yesterday and he came back and offered an additional £2k for the Jimny, Had a dealer down south willing to pay more.
So for me £11k was good enough to avoid the hassle of selling private.

I am soon to be the owner of a Subaru Outback.

Not the most exciting car in the world but possible one of the most all round cars.

Just looked it up, the Jimny SZ4 was list price £14,700 in 2016.
Deprecation (to me) of £3700 or 25% in 8yr.
Potentially looking at the listings I guess someone has bought one of these and made money over that time.

Salesguy said the prices online were too high really didn't know who would be paying that sort of price (£20k for an old auto, they'd sold new edition Jimnys for not much more) and thought that they were being stockpiled for some reason. Might be true might be rollocks.

Back in 2003 my Jimny Automatic was £12,000 from Belmont Perth. They had bought a lot of Blue Jimny JLX that were Australian spec.  (200 i think.)

I used a 5 year interest free loan from Motability.  (they used to do that & 4 years interest free on used cars.)

It needed the front swivels done at the 2nd MOT.  (Jimny Death Wobble)

I think it was maybe 2012 or so it went to my son to be used and abused for a few years, then i tidied it up and it went to my G/F.

Never much spend on it. Needed some welding.

It went to Arnold Clark for £1,000 in 2018 i think, 15 years old.  Sold for £4,000 after changing hands a few times.

It is still on the road, MOT,d till December.   Hard to believe really.   I hope not a ringer as after 3 registered keepers when Arnold Clark got it i received speeding tickets.

Then seemingly it wrote off a car outside a huge Salvage Yard in Wakefield.  During Lock Down and the Cherished Plate it went to Arnold Clark was mine and it was back to it,s original number.   My car with the reg number supposedly in the accident was at a MOT Station in Forfar and it was during Lockdown.

*It always brushed up quite nicely.*

Blue Jimny.

SM53 HLD.    21 years old. £63,101 miles at the last MOT.

Read the failures list.

2018 I MOT,d to trade in.

2019 lol.

Re New Jimny Automatics.

Those that Ordered a New Style Jimny and received it First Registered to them from the like of West End Broughty Ferry could sell them the same day and get a £2,000 profit easily.

Some got more than that on Automatics.

The Dealerships were not allowed to keep them and bump the price.

I know people that bought a few and sold them immediately.

Gamekeeper at the shooting was admiring of my Jimny, asked me every time if it was an auto cos he's buy it off me.
They get them modified to use to feed the birds. Maybe cheaper or more useful than using the polaris buggies. No idea.
