Consistent coolant loss

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have a 2013 SKODA rapid with the CBZA 1.2TSI engine

I have a consistent coolant leak at the moment. It started in May, when I had a small service. Since then I noticed the coolant was a little low but still between Min and Max.

A few weeks ago I changed my alternator and almost took off the oil filter housing but found a another way to get it out. In doing that, I must have pinched a seal or something because I know that there is a small leak from the bottom of the housing behind the alternator. It isn't too bad but for the amoumt of coolant I'm loosing out of it and on the undertray, it can't be it.

I'm having to top up every week from just below Min to Max.

There is no change in oil level, no milky stuff under the oil cap.

No bubbles or smells on start up with the expansion cap off.

No white smoke.

I don't want it to be head gasket but if it could be then fair enough.

Noticed tonight after having the engine off for an hour or two, that there was a hissing noise from the expansion cap.

Could this be a part of it?

I've ordered some new seals for the filter housing and a expansion cap but wondered what people thought about the possible causes and how much coolant in loosing per week?

Probably stating the obvious here but have you tried Radweld or equivalent ?

When there is not a leak, and the OP knows there is.   Coolant can set its own level.   There is no FILL to THIS LEVEL mark.    As long as it does not go to MIN then it does not need to stay at MAX.     Once it puts extra out the overflow if that is all it is then mark that level with a marker.     If it drops then find the reason.    PS.  Always  best find why leaking rather than use Radweld.  Unless you are Kerb Side Autos.   The OP knows where the leak is.

Yeh, I know where one is but it just doesn't seem enough of a leak to be taking so much coolant out of the expansion tank.

That small one I am fixing myself.

Doesn't matter now because I think there's a second one as its got much worse, so I'm taking it to a garage in the morning to get it looked at. Hopefully it's nothing too bad.

I think we have a similar issue with our Rapid. How did the conversation with the garage go if you don’t mind me asking?
