Strange things with brakes, seat and infotainment system.

Featured Replies

I don't know whether it's a considense or unrelated, but my Enyaq has started doing some strange things, the brakes heave always been quite progressive, but the other day when coming to a stop the brakes have become really grabby when coming to a stop, almost like it's emergency braking. No lights or warnings. It's intermittent, it can be fine and then the next time I stop it's grabbing badly. Then the electric seat memory function, lumber support adjustment and massage function on the drivers seat have all stopped working. Backwards and forwards, up and down are fine. Last night the infotainment system just crashed, no digital dash, nothing. Came back on after 30 seconds. Has anyone had these issues?

The brake thing is quite common on MEB platform cars. I've had it on my ID.4. Its caused by the partial seizing of the front brake calipers, due to their lack of use in an EV which is the result of most braking being done by regen. It only happens in the last 5 meters or so of braking as regen is doing it's thing until then but the car has to brake quite hard to blend the friction brakes in when coming to rest to overcome the partial seizing. When the brake calipers suddenly move as the brakes 'give' it is felt as 'grabbiness' on the last few meters.

The actual solution is a caliper clean / lube to free the brakes and ensure it doesn't' happen again. I had my brakes lubed/cleaned by my trusted mechanic prior to MOT and this will be an annual thing going forward. All decent EV mechanics will suggest a brake service / lube as part of normal servicing.

The problem can be mitigated for a while by 'brake clear' procedure. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK AND WITH DUE CARE FOR OTHER ROAD USERS.

  1. Find a good quiet straight bit of road, slightly downhill if possible
  2. Get up to 40 mph or so
  3. Ensure no traffic behind
  4. ENSURE NO TRAFFIC BEHIND
  5. Put car in neutral
  6. Brake really hard, activating the ABS system (brake pedal will pulse)
  7. repeat

The ABS activation will rattle the calipers loose and will resolve the grabbiness for a while.

That seems to have solved the brake problem thanks.

The problem stopped for a few days and then came back. I repeated the above and it went away again, but has come back. 4 times now within a few weeks. I feel like one of the rear brakes is not working as it should, when the auto hold is released the car seems to stick slightly, it's difficult to describe.

Have you had the brakes cleaned / lubed or just done the TEMPORARY hard braking fix?

Just the temporary fix. It's going in to skoda soon so I'll add it to the list for them to look at the brakes too.
