When reversing up a hill, car can smell.

Featured Replies

Hi, i have read a few threads and it appears to happen BUT can i confirm all ok. I now live on a moderate hill and most days i will park and have to reverse uphill, not much but started to sometimes get a like burning rubber smell. This only happens when reversing uphill. Any advice greatly accepted, thanks.

Which engine and transmission?

Diesel, manual.

Not what I was thinking then, which is most likely to occur with a small petrol and a PDK.

Thanks anyway.

Are you having to  'slip' the clutch while you are reversing?

No PDK,s get fitted to a Skoda. They are fitted to a Porsche and you get more engine braking with them than with DSG,s or S-tronics in Audi,s VW, seat or Skoda be then wet or dry.

Do you have Climatronic and are your reversing lights working?

Climatronic switches to recirculating air when reversing to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the cabin, the same can be said for clutch smells or DPF regen smells.

Most likely clutch on the way out, how old is the clutch?

Age is irrelevant to clutch wear. No-one ever had to replace a clutch because it was old.

Bit pedantic but true, you know what I am getting at. An older car is more likely to have higher mileage, hence more likely to be near failure.

OP, my 20015 at 140K just had new clutch and flywheel fitted.

Just out of curiosity how much did it cost for that work?

So just to update, ive now called AA as stearing has gone, car wont start, its like a party in the dashboard.

Your latest fault is almost certainly battery condition or SOC related.

How old is your battery? There should be a date stamp on the top surface of the negative terminal (WWYY)

AA have been said my aux belt gone, parked outside garage as he said i need new belt and tensioner

The failure of the aux. belt could very likely be the source of your original 'burning rubber smell' - did you not notice the alternator failure warning light?

Not sure what that one looks like

Looking it up as to what can happen it does sound like it is the case, as steering died and everything just whent dead.

It's the 'battery' symbol (red) warning indicator light in the instrument cluster.

Yes i did have a battery warning come up and then power steering light

Was around €1100, which was a really good price. I think around €1500 at an Indy is more typical.
