2023 Kamiq - How to drain fuel tank?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a family friend who owns a 2023 Kamiq with the 1.0 TSI engine. They accidentally filled up with diesel then when they realised, they filled up with petrol to dilute it. The car continued to run but with misfires that day then wouldn't start the following morning. I checked the spark plugs, they're wet with fuel which would explain no-start.

I want to start by draining the fuel system and put fresh petrol in there. I tried searching for resources online to answer the following questions but there doesn't seem to be much out there. So if anyone has any knowledge on the below, it would be greatly appreciated!

- Can I syphon the fuel directly from the fuel filler cap or is there an anti-syphon valve on these cars?

- If the above is not possible, I considered disconnect the fuel line going into high pressure fuel pump then jumping the fuel pump relay. I was able to find fuse diagrams for this car but no relay diagrams. Which relay controls the tank fuel pump?

- If the above two are not possible, I guess I must access the fuel tank directly. For the life of me, I wasn't able to lift up the rear seats enough or remove them. Is there a trick to this?

Are they not better getting professionals in as the recovered fuel will need to be disposed of,  there are people that supply this service, I've even seen one fixing my next door neighbours error, but I can't remember what the name of that national provider is.

Are they not in a "motoring service" like RAC/AA/GreenFlag?

Edit:- I know that it is not an answer to your question, but maybe just give in and hand this job over to the professionals this time.

the fuel pump has a module next to it, which is supplied with power from fuse and is triggerd by the ECU, so you can.t bypass the relay, because there is none.

the most effective way is to disconnect the pipe from the high pressure fuel pump, then get to the tank fuel pump plug , identify the 2 power wires (+ and -) and supply 12 v from the battery.

the 2 wires are thicker , yellow/white and blue/grey

first you need to remove the ISOFIX covers.

the rear seat has 2 hooks on the front  and you have to pull hard up, with both hands.

E72-10150

after you release the seat, you have to push a little to the back to release the seat from 2 other hooks in the back

This is a risky operation and what rum4mo says is highly relevant. - get a professional in, the RAC or AA or Green Flag or an equivalent.  (They may come out for a fee if your friends are not members.)

Or if your friends are in Skoda Roadside Assistance, they would sort  things out.

What is involved is more than draining the fuel tank and cleaning it out.  There will be contamination in the fuel lines, fuel pump and injectors which will need dealing with.  And the contaminated cleaning materials will need to be safely disposed of as well as the contaminated fuel

No problem on a petrol engined vehicle, a little residual diesel in the injection system will only serve to lubricate things, its a different matter when its a common rail diesel with petrol sloshing around.

Plenty of ways to get rid of petrol laced with a bit of diesel, 4 stroke petrol engined lawn mowers and 2 stroke strimmers cutters etc are all happy recipients or you can add some to every tank refill of an older diesel vehicle, I got rid of 40 litres like that.

I would be reticent to dose it into the tank refills of a modern petrol or diesel engine for fear of contamination a DPF GPF or catastrophic convertor.

When i did the opposite, put petrol in a diesel  i realised after starting the fill up so had only managed 8 litres in.

Our company recovery company attended and did some quick math. 75 litre tank, already 3% bio  ethanol from the diesel pump, so if we filled it wth diesel it would be more than the percentage we could get away with.

He said if the resulting percentage of petrol diesel mix had been 5% unleaded in the biodiesel it would have been OK. Dpf and adblu engine.

And this was superunleaded. The petrol station we have used for years had changed hands and the pump i regularly used, used to be two diesel pumps left and centre with one petrol on the right. It had been changed to Superunleaded on the left with diesel in the middle.

Thanks all for your replies and support.

I managed to drain the old fuel by disconnecting the fuel line to the high pressure fuel pump, then gave power to the fuel pump until the tank was empty. Disposed of the old fuel appropriately. The car still wouldn't start after putting in fresh fuel and drying the spark plugs, so I decided to just change the fouled spark plugs with new ones. Car is back to normal and runs great :)
