EPC and engine waring light

Featured Replies

EPC light comes on now and then, sometimes also the yellow engine warning light with it. Engine gets jerky but drivable, but a stop and start usually clears it and I can drive normally. This has happened with both warm and cold engine, with full throttle, on low throttle and in everything from -20 to +25 degrees Celsius.

I had a similar problem this winter (though car just barely could go forward when EPC light came on), but it stopped after swapping the coils. So all four coils are just 6 months old, I've barely used the car, and they've been used maximum 5000km.. After the problem reappeared i changed all the spark plugs. This is todays fault code readout after a few shorter trips. I cleared all codes a few days ago.

I don't think the 4729 - Steering Effort Control Module is relevant as I have some other issues with the car that aren't relevant (read more on ross-tech).

Do you have any idea on what I can do?

short update to this problem. I could seemingly drive for half an hour without anything happening, but suddenly today, EPC and Engine Warning Light came on and the car was bogging a lot. No warning, just suddenly seemed to start misfiring. I've looked fairly thourougly for vacum leaks, but I can not hear, see or feel any, and I tried spraying start gas around all vacum connectors without any results. I had one leak suspicion and sealed it properly (plastic had a crack, just taped it up).

Did a new readout of codes now after the fault came back again, and this is what it reads:

It's usually only cylinder 1 this happens on. I've previously also tried swapping coils and spark plugs with no different result.

I've also been reading everything I can find about theese 1.4 TSI engines, and it seems like carbon buildup on the intake is a common problem. Is there any point in trying to add injector cleaner to the fuel?

Could vaccum cause misfires on only one cylinder?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Usually 1 cylinder with Euro 5 1.4 TSI Twinchargers 132-136 kW engines.

Not so sure it is just an issue with other 1.4 TSI,s.

I would not use additives / detergents other than what you get using E5 Super Unleaded 97 or 99 ron minimum.

Which country are you in @Steinrawr & how many miles / km has the car done?

  • Author

I am in Norway @Ootohere, our fuel is unleaded 95 octane E10. Anything else is practically impossible for me to get my hands on.

Considering doing a workshop visit, but diagnosing this would likely be very expensive.

I tried doing a compression test, but I think my test Gauge is faulty, as it wouldn't move at all, on any cylinder, or my snowblower 😂

Any other suggestions to this?

I haven't used the car a lot so there's hasn't been any lights lately, As far as I can tell, It tends to light the warning lights when just started cold, or after an hours time when warm.

Coils and plugs are as stated above just recently changed. I will do a fuel filter replacement soon too, but i doub't thats my perpretrator.

I have a suspicion towards the intake manifold having a large carbon build up, but I can't really tell for sure without actually removing it.

have a 2015 skoda rapid 1.4lt with dsg trans. Had exact same issue and found wire to coil connector damage at connector. Fixed this and problem no more. It appears to have occurred when previous owner had spark plugs replaced. I think the wires were yanked when removing the coil to change the plug. Amatuer job dome replacing the plug as more than one connector and coil damaged during this process.

Recommend freeing the wiring harness along the length of the plastic tray before removing coils

Thanks for the advice! I think I will go through that too. What specifically did you notice on your harness? Broken insulators? Loose connectors?

It might be random, but i think my car is at its worst on less than half a tank, which makes me think fuel filter could be a culprit too. Ive driven it four days (150 km a day), and on the fourth day it passes half a tank and the problems came again.  They do dissappear after turning the ignition off and on again though.

Getting tired of this ****. 🥲

EPC and engine were intermittent on mine also and so far at least have found it to be electrical. The first thing i checked was the battery voltage level as most modern vehicles will have issues with ABS/EPC/ESP if the battery voltage is at 12.4 V and below. Fixing the battery issue resulted in the EPC and engine light coming on less frequently.

Where I live Rats and Mice are a problem and use the engine for warmth and they like to chew wiring so next step was to check all wiring in the engine bay starting with wiring to the coils. I had the engine running when I checked the coil wiring and first wriggled the connector, then the wires into the connectors. On moving the wires into coil 1 connector the engine ran rougher and when I moved the wires in the opposite direction, the engine idled smoother.

However in all off the vehicles I have repaired recently including 2018 GMC Sierra, 2022 Mazda 3, 2005 and 2007 Ford Falcon and 2012 VW Golf, replacing the Battery has fixed this problem even though the Batteries were at 12.4V when I tested them.

Thanks, thats very helpful.

My battery is in very good condition, and the car is mainly driven for over an hour for each ride. I swapped all the coils and plugs, but made sure to not pull anything, previous owners could have fugged it up though.

  • Author

OK, so i might be jinxing it...

But I think I solved it, thanks to @Oztony. I checked the wire loom around the coils, and behold... On cyl1, I could replicate misfires by wiggling the wires. I took off the connector and checked the wire, wire was fine, but the whole connector was a little loose inside, and the metal parts didn't mate snuggly, so I gave them a sqeeze and reassembled. Couldnt replicate the fault by wiggling the wires any more.

So far so good, did a little test drive and had the car idle for a while, now I just have to reset the DTCs when I get home from night shift at work.

I'm crossing my fingers that was it.
