2003 OCTAVIA VRS HEADLAMPS

Can anyone shed some light on a headlight problem? The N/S headlamp doesn't work whatever the position of the dashboard and stalk switches with the ignition on, day or night. However, it does come on at night but only when I lock and leave the car - ie for "coming home". I've fitted a new xenon lamp, there are no obvious signs of damage, cable faults etc. The O/S headlight works correctly.

Any ideas? Did I read somewhere that there is a re-set procedure?
