2015 Scout workshop manual to remove rear diff

Hi Guy,

 

I've checked through the forum and any manual likes I found all seem to be expired. I have a 2015 4x4 scout with what appears to be a noisy rear diff and I have a guy that can rebuild it for me if I remove it. going to have a go this week but looking for a manual to give me a steer on removal as I imagine its a fairly big job.

Has everything else been checked before dismantling.

Haldex Serviced OK, rear bearings, coupling in OK condition.

?

Has the rear Diff had an Oil change in the past 9 years?

iv only had the car for 2 months and although it has good history it doesn't mention specifically the diff oil. Going to check the haldex tomorrow as I have a spare pump from my t6 that I didnt use as it was a faulty ECU and I couldn't send it back.  Rear bearings have both been done, altho its not a wheel bearing noise.. and doesnt get worse if you 'sway' the car left to right. what normally goes with the coupling? in my mind I was thinking carrier bearings or similar.. 

With the coupling the clutch disks may go bad but i believe that does not cause noise, just slipping and no rear drive. Haldex oil wud then have lots of junk in it but as you know it always has some (the pump screen and housing).

 

Have you considered driveshaft joints? Cud cause noise.

 

Also, changing rear diff oil is simplest oil change one can do so perhaps try that out? You wud also see if there is ie. metal in the oil.

 

Also have you tried to lift the car and

a) run it with 1 gear all wheels up and are all wheels spinning and how is the noise/rear diff?

b) engine off hand brake off spinning the rear wheels by hand (wheel on other side shud spin to opposite direction). You should hear some noise from the diff while doing so, but nothing crazy.

I dropped the haldex oil and it was like gravy.. took the pump off and the gauze was covered in gunk  as was the inside of the pump. So it needed a service, but that wouldnt cause the noise.. just the haldex to fail. Drained the diff oil and it was as golden as the sun. Im guessing that the previous owner had it looked at and after a dirty, oil change with possibly some filings they decided to get rid rather than spend the money trying to fix it. 

 

Started into removing the diff before the weather got to miserable and I called it a day, but I have a few queries.. in order to get the subframe down is there access to the top of the bolt that holds the diff up? or is it in its own housing so that when you take off the note the bolt doesn't spin.. I checked the boot floor and couldn't see any access.

 

any other tips from someone that has already done it before would really be appreciated..

The diff oil will still look like that after 200K miles unless someone has run it dry after mistaking the diff drain plug for the Haldex one.

 

I laugh when people pay garages to change the diff oil as a preventative measure.

 

It will be interesting to see if the noise turns out to be the diff bearing (if it is it will be the left hand output shaft one) and whether your mechanic can actually source the parts and rebuild it, most cant/wont these days.

 

The bearings can be sourced but the oil seals are/were unobtanium, they heave to be hoiked out to replace the bearings, if damaged then you are foutu!
