2014 estate VRs Skoda Octavia burning oil

Featured Replies

Hey guys ,

I have a 2014 mk3 estate VRs Octavia and she’s burning up oil had her checked out the pvc valve and turbo is ok and there is no apparent leaks coming anywhere she is using a litre of oil per week and burning it when u start her after leaving her to rest for a while any suggestions what be worth looking at or what could be causing the problem

Hello, welcome to the forum.

- It will help others if you say what engine you have - and whether TSI or TDI.

- How many miles are you driving in a week?

- Is there heavy, blue smoke from the exhaust on first start from cold?

It’s a 2l VRs tdi cr engine ,doing around 300 miles weekly and it’s using up about 800ml of oil and there’s white smoke when you start it after a long sit and clears after 2 minutes

Therefore a EA888 engine - either Gen 3 or 4?

Have you done a search on this forum for oil consumption issues with this engine?

Are you sure the smoke on start up is white, not blue? Heavy blue smoke after standing for a period possibly suggests worn valve guides.

White exhaust smoke suggests burnt coolant, unless it is simply steam condensation you are seeing - which is normal for a cold engine.

Does the exhaust smoke heavily on throttle up after running downhill or after 'backing off' on engine overrun?

Ignore the first line, I misread that you in fact have a TDI. Lines 3, 4 & 5 will still apply to your engine.

It appears that yours is the EA189 engine - which was the one involved in Dieselgate - but I've not been able to find any particular issues with oil consumption with this engine.

How many miles has it done?

It’s on 170k miles just wondering if I can check anything else

There's only three places the oil can be going - onto the ground, out the crankcase breather - or out the exhaust. Is it calling for frequent DPF regens?

If it's burning that quantity of oil, there should be a significant amount of smoke, especially on the overrun.

I'd suggest getting a compression test done.

I have the dpf gutted and deleted and it’s coming out in the exhaust through white smoke , will have to get a compression test booked it

Any branches in Northern Ireland that do compression tests in particular is there

The car does not smoke when you start it just when you drive it and there is resistance to power feels like cars slower at gaining speed then smoke appears when high revs then clears in about 3/4 minutes and then back to normal

You did originally say that it emitted white smoke for two minutes after start from a long stand - was this incorrect?

When car is sitting idle in place she is not smoking only when u start driving it starts smoking when reving it but clears in about 2 minutes , I’ve been suggested piston rings but that would be whole engine rebuild , so just trying get any other ideas what might be causing it

I repeat my suggestion to get a compression test done on the engine.

I want to say valve-stem oil seals, but I'm not a mechanic.

I think you should listen to Warrior.
