Gearbox Issues

Featured Replies

Hello, someone might have read this topic made by me about changing the gearbox, ( this new topic is basically the "sequel" to the old one ) anyways
When the generic mechanic opened the original gearbox, he found everything in good shape, nothing broken or worse. so he told us not to change the gearbox and gave us the car back. ( Note: the skoda service center said it had to be replaced at a mindblowing 7500 €, thats why we told them to pack it up to bring it to the generic mechanic, the car drove fine for around 200km- ish )
This evening, after a roundabout, the gears would not engage, basically the car was forced in neutral, after stopping to the side we engaged the reverse gear, then shifted through all the gears to try and "debug" it, it actually worked and we could continue driving. after about 1.5 km or so the same thing happened, so we did the same thing but when i arrived to 5th and 6th, they would not engage, not even a chance, but we didnt need them at these slow city speeds, so we continued again. When i arrived home we couldnt engage 1st, so again we did the same thing and magically all the gears began to engage normally.

What the hell is happening here?! i was told the gearbox was fine and it now gives these issues? ( Note that the Clutch was replaced by the service center ) anyone has a clue on what this car has?

Chris, just a quick thought.

Did they change the clutch slave cylinder?

If they didn't, try bleeding the clutch, see if that makes any difference.

i think they just replaced the clutch because they didnt tell me anything else

Are the gearbox linkages all OK or out of adjustment?

Im gonna have to check the selector out later

Hi

This sounds like a linkage problem.

There are normally two cables from under the gear lever to the linkage on to of the gearbox. One carries the motion of the gearlever from Left to Right, the other carries the motion from Forward to Backward.  On top of the gearbox are levers connected to a vertical shaft going down into the casing. This shaft is rotated by the Left/Right cable and moved up and down (in and out of the casing) by the Forward/Backward cable.  Under the gearlever is another mechanism to drive the cables from the lever, plus the reverse gear detent.

If for example 1/2 are OK and 3/4 are OK but you cannot get 5/6, the problem is in the Left to Right cable or linkage.

If for example you can move the gearlever from side to side but not engage any gear, the problem is in the Forward to Backward cable or linkage.

I forgot to specify that after some time ( seconds ) all gears work normally, still a linkage problem?

( Btw thanks )

With a linkage problem the gearlever will feel odd

If the clutch is not disengaging fully (dragging) it will be hard to engage gears

Hi Guys,

Sorry to jump in here, but oddly enough my 2010 Octavia is also having this exact issue, I thought it was the cv joint failing but just jacked it up and all looks ok,

Will need to check the linkages and cables out,

This just happened to me on exiting a roundabout also, but no work done to clutch or gearbox recently so insure how the linkages would have changed.

Wear?

Not sure, I know clutch was replaced when we first brought it about 3 year ago.

I see this on top of gear box should I top up with gear oil to see if helps or would I be causing more issues

You are going to make a mess if you try topping the gearbox up through that! Never top up something unless you know how to judge the correct level.

You cannot "check" the gear linkages as you describe, there is a resetting procedure which is very simple to follow, basically you lock of the gearlever with a suitable pin - drill bit, nail, Allen key anything the right size then you pull back some plastic locking collars on the gear cables allowing them to adopt the correct length then push the collars back, job done!

Its something that should be done after gearbox removal but usually isn't as most times the gears engage properly as indeed yours did initially.

Cheers mate will try this now

My money is on a linkage issue, Personally I've not heard that the 6sp manual is prone to premature failure plus gearbox faults do not generally manifest themselves in the manner described, they tend to break and stay broken!

If it helps at all this is a photo of the linkages on my car, in neutral of course.

My linkage was always sloppy, it felt like a very old car, it was only when I removed the gearbox to replace the clutch slave cylinder that I found someone had been there before me, someone who threw away fixings when he could not immediately see where they had removed them from and left others finger tight.....................

When I came to remove the weighted quadrant shown in the first photo the nut was only hanging on by a thread and the quadrant was flopping around all over the place, after refitting the gearbox and tightening the nut correctly I initially found it harder to select gears, I had to be much more precise now the linkage had no play.

Something else to check on yours but from the photo it looks OK, some lubrication would not go amiss though.
