Mk. 111 1.6 Automatic Regen Query.

Featured Replies

My 2016 Mk. 111 regens ok with normal revs increase and fans running but the auto box seems to go into sports mode on it's own and changes gear at  much higher revs, [I normally drive in eco]. When regen is complete the box reverts back to eco. Is this normal or is their a fault?

I dont have an auto but that sounds perfectly plausible, the gearchange prompts on my Maxidot display will tell me to change down earlier and hold a lower gear longer when the engine is doing a regen.

Not that I take any notice of them, I don't like being told what to do!

Yes normal, regen needs high temperature and revs equal temperature.

IMO the car is much better to drive when it is doing a regen 😁

I think egr is also closed during a regen and the engine performs better. Cud be wrong tho.

Enjoy the regens!

I don't know what engine you have, but my 1.6 does not change modes. I would not consider that to be normal and I've not seen any other posts about this.

It does not literally go to sports mode. It just alters the shift points so that it generally drives on higher rpm during a regen. The actual sport mode is way different, it holds way more the low gears and higher rpms than the regen rpms.

Yes EGR is inhibited, I doubt that there is any performance gain unless any of the post combustion injection fuel remains in the cylinder after the exhaust stroke, my engine sounds raspy and rough when doing a regen but I need the windows open to appreciate it, I should say used to sound as since having the emissions fix rolled back it only regens once every 1000kms and I am never aware of it, fans have only come on once from an interrupted regen once in 3 years.

It would be normal for the gearbox to change up and down at higher revs during a regen, the maxidot display on the manual gearbox cars changes its suggested gear prompts in this manner during a regen, the owners manual advises the driver to do exactly this during a regen.

The OP has now said it doesn't literally go into sports mode. I was just going by what he originally posted.

Noticeable "more guts" when my 2.0 TDI does a regen. Very normal behaviour, becomes more sedated once finished, (unless I stomp on the go pedal😄).

How do you notice"more guts" unless you are driving on full throttle?

More instant throttle response I could understand.

I drive very economically pretty much all the time so would not know that the vehicle had gained or lost power until I tried to use it.

If I am aware of a regen I will select a lower gear than normal but only in a 50kph limit where I am usually doing less than 1000 rpm.

slightly more torque it what it feels like.

Can you have a regen without any warning lights showing?

Yes, normally there is no warning lights or any indication that regen is happening. They tried to make it user friendly so that one cud drive the car whitout even noticing the regens.

Typically people notice it when they park the car during a active regen because of the fan staying on and burning smell. During driving one can notice the higher rpms and increased idle rpms.
