Looking for advice on Options for New Octavia Sportline

Featured Replies

Hey Folks,

I am in the process of buying a new Octavia Sportline, 2.0TDi DSG. I am coming from a Mk3 TDI VRS and love that car. While thinking about options the two things that are must have for me are

  • Winter Driving Pack
  • Adaptive Cruise
  • 5 Year Warranty

I have these and use them all of the time, the heated windscreen in particular is brilliant in my opinion.

Three options I don't have and don't think that I would use are

  • 13" Infotainment, the 10" screen in the car I test drove was fine and I would use Android auto anyway.
  • Side assist, I never had it only on rental cars and I use my mirrors and check my blind spots.
  • DCC, I thought the chassis was fine on the test drive and I don't have it on my current car. Don't think I would miss it.
  • Electric seats. Too expensive and I am the only driver, so don't see a benefit here tbh.

My question for you folks is this, am I missing anything here, are any of the options in the not getting list must haves for you. The Sportline is really well specced as is so only really those 3 am I thinking of asking for. I am hoping to get some of your experience and input here as it is a big decision for me and I don't want to miss out on something that I would regret.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Conor

The facelift models have yet to break cover physically in NZ but from what I've seen and read so far in reviews and their accompanying images (as well as the official downlodable brochures), it seems that the larger touch screen protrudes quite a bit above the dash top.  Maybe I am being my usual pernickety self but I think this spoils the uncluttered look of the cabin,

The side assist would depend on your driving environment.  I have found it useful when backing up long drives or exiting a parking slot when bounded on both sides by tall vehicles such as crossovers, SUVs and pickup trucks/utes that are so popular these days.

DCC was something I was also thinking of not having but my car was built during the time of the chip shortage crisis and was mandatory with the so called Premium pack.  It does provide a more comfy ride around marred, potholded streets - important to consider if yours is being specced with 19" wheels.

I have not experienced any Mk4 Octavia with manual seats as all the vRS demonstrators here come with the powered option.  One thing to consider is whether the base cushion may be tilted with the manual seats as even with the powered perches, the base feels a tad flat for my tastes.

Hope the above helps and enjoy your new ride.

I've had a car with a 10" screen and have now one with a 13" inch screen. I'm definitely in favor of having the bigger touchscreen.

Yes, it is protruding above the dash but it still sits low enough as to not block any view out of the windscreen (compare that to a Golf where the screen sits quite a bit higher).

Thanks Arturp, I had a look at both and while the 13" is really nice and doesn't obstruct the view as you say. It is €1,400 and I think the 10.5" looks fine to me, those couple of inches are very expensive :D

I'm a month into owning a facelift Octavia Estate in SE Technology form with the 150PS TDI / DSG drivetrain.

I unexpectedly have adaptive cruise - my car is on lease and wasn't meant to have any options.  I've had it active when the car in front indicated to turn right and gradually slowed down.  I wasn't sure how clever it was, so I had the brakes covered throughout but my car gracefully slowed and stopped behind the turning car.  Once the road was clear, it starting off down the road again which was impressive.

There is a weakness with the speed limit / sign recognition (at least in the UK).  The car will often pickup a speed limit sign for a side road / turning.  I get this a couple of times on my way to/from the office.  I'm driving in a 40mph limit but the camera sees a 30 limit on a side road and wants to slow down.  If adaptive cruise is off, the speed warning bongs away and moans until the next 40mph repeater sign.  Another example is being in a 50mph limit but a turning goes derestricted, so the car thinks it should do 60 (until the next 50mph repeater on my road).

I think UK facelift cars all have the 13" screen as standard, so can't comment on the difference  other than to say I don't find the 13" intrusive in the field of view.  I would be very tempted by the upgrade but €1400 for it is pretty steep.

Hey Cri5B,

Congrats on your new car, I hope you are enjoying it! Funny you should mention the speed sign recognition. While I was out on my test drive, I was keeping up with traffic about 80kmh on a road I have driven often. The car picked up a 60kmh sign, the car was in adaptive cruise, this surprised me and the car began to slow down. I asked the sales man if the road was 60 and he was smiling and said that it is, the speed limit had been changed recently. The rest of traffic was pulling away not knowing or caring. He said it was a new favourite spot for the traffic police to raise money lol I thought the feature was a nice one to have, but I can see how it would become annoying if I was picking up spurious signals.

Ya I was tempted too, he shown me on in another model. It was nice and a big display, but I could live with the 10.5". He is taking delivery of one himself, it is in PDI this week. He didn't go for the option on his either, he said himself it was very nice but too expensive.

Thanks,

Conor

Belatedly, I should add wireless Android Auto with my Pixel 8 Pro has been flawless to date for me - hopefully would be as good for you and you save the big upgrade cost.

This is one of the adaptive "mis-reads" I mentioned above.  The NSL sign on the right is picked up and overrides the actual 50mph limit.  Would be difficult to filter out though (from Skoda's perspective) as you could be on the inside lane of a dual carriageway, so a sign positioned there could be valid.

Ah yes, I see what you mean. You can understand why the system would pick that up inadvertently alright.

Ya I will stick with the Android Auto, have the S23 Ultra myself and have used it in BMW and Mercedes rentals in the past and it was really excellent.

Thank you,

Conor

My car (a 2023 Mk.4 iV) very occasionally does this, so on roads where I know the speed limit, I quickly use the ACC stalk to set the correct speed. It's helpful that the "cockpit" speedometer displays all these different settings.

What my ACC/PCC also does, though much less often, is to change its "speed limit" to the (incorrect) one stored in the navigation system. Sometimes this data is many years out of date and applies to only sections of the road, even the whole road has always had the same limit along its whole length, whatever the speed limit is/was at the time.

Hey @vRS 170TDi Cork just took delivery today. Hope yours arrives soon too

I would have thought adaptive cruise would be standard in this day and age. I’ve been surprised how relaxing it is to have on when the traffic flow keeps changing speed on a motorway.

I wouldn’t have thought DC would be needed on a non RS due to the softer suspension tuning of the non sporty models and higher ride height (and smaller wheels).

I just test drove the old mark 4 and felt the new bigger screen in the 4.5 is much better but I can see how it wouldn’t be a deal breaker, the most important thing is the new software and faster hardware that the 4.5 brings.

Side assist I also think should be standard fitment on all new vehicles.

I have the electric RS seats primarily because they really lift the RS cabin ambience but also because it gives dipping offside mirror in reverse and memory so I can set it up and my wife won’t mess with my settings :)
