Hi everyone. My Yeti does a weird thing when decelerating. It feels like it's  trying to hesitate while  I'm not really pressing the pedal, just covering it to coast slowly downhill in 2nd gear? Has anyone experienced this problem. It's already been to a garage who checked for fault codes and found none.  They therefore changed the fuel filter put some cleaner additive and told me to see how it goes. I always use Premium Shell diesel and try to give it an "Italian tune up " once a week. Any help would be appreciated.

Mine does it on certain downhill sections when like you I am covering the throttle, its always after the suspension has gone slightly light when cresting the previous incline.

 

The weird thing is that it should only happen when you have "got air" as they say, inadvertently taken off or unloaded the suspension to full rebound, it is to stop the wheels spinning and maybe loss of control when the spinning wheels gained traction again, indeed it does do that in extremis but there are also 2 parts of roads that I regularly travel when it does it after the gentlest of crests taken at moderate speed with barely any unloading of the suspension, always when I am on a trailing throttle, it feels like running out of fuel, there is a definite pause before the power comes back in and it does so very slowly, exactly what it should do if I had "got air"! - Thats probably not the phrase the youngsters use.

 

To me its just another feature like the slight transmission wind up through the 4x4 reversing out of a supermarket parking place on full lock.

Both my 2WD Yetis have done this.

Just a random thought;

 

A previous car I had was  Diesel x-type Jaguar. A peculiar issue was found with a couple of owners (not with mine though) where smooth gear changing became erratic. The cause was found to be a faulty switch on the clutch pedal(!)

Apparantly the switch, when working correctly, cause the engine revs to die rapidly when the clutch pedal is pushed down and the throttle pedal released. This 'feature' could be tested on a correctly working car by driving along at eg 40mph, then slipping the car into neutral. If the throttle was then released, it would be seen that the engine revs would not immediately drop, however the moment the clutch pedal was dabbed (with the the car still in neutral) and the revs would drop to idle.

 

Anyway the upshot of the Yeti issue. Is it possible you have your foot on the clutch pedal when you see this hesitation issue? Maybe there is a switch on the clutch pedal for a similar function to my X-type and it is faulty or needs adjustment?

For me no, I never ride the clutch, also I know from VCDS and also having to depress the clutch in order to start the engine that the clutch switch operates way down the travel after the disengagement point.

 

Its just possible that the switch is being falsely triggered, maybe the toroidal magnet on the master cylinder piston that triggers it has come loose, next time it happens I will look at the Maxidot display which would not show what gear the car is in when the clutch switch is operated.
