Waze triggering virtual cockpit map/tinny direction announcements

Featured Replies

Hi all, I’ve been searching around but had no luck finding solutions for these issues on my MY24 Scala SE L:

I’m using my Samsung Galaxy S21 for Android Auto and it works fine for the most part. When I start navigation in Waze or Google Maps, the virtual cockpit immediately switches to a view with the built-in navigation map, meaning I have to use the steering wheel buttons to shift back to the view I was using. Has anyone found a solution for this?

I’ve also noticed that Waze/Google Maps navigation announcements/directions sound really thin, tinny and sometimes distorted. I think they are still coming through the entertainment system’s speakers but it’s like someone’s giving me directions over the phone! Is this anyone else’s experience? My last car was a SEAT Leon, and announcements always sounded full and clean in that car, coming through what appeared to be a dedicated centre speaker on top of the dash, which my Scala also appears to have though I’ve never heard it being used.

Thanks in advance!

I'm sorry I cannot help you.

However I am heartily amused at the thread title in the forum list.

There's a little head-scratcher for the mods. 😄

I suppose that's a Waze feature for when you're really looking forward to where you're going. 😄

Do you have another blue-tooth device connected to your phone? On a different make of car with Android Auto combined with an Amazon Echo Auto I had a bizarre situation where some audio came out of the tiny Echo Auto speaker inc phone calls taken in the car. There was also a bit of a tussle as to which device (Amazon Echo Auto or Android Auto) controlled the navigation.

I stopped using the Echo Auto altogether and all was well - it was only a hangover of something I used in my previous Ludite S model Superb II that had blue-tooth but nothing else re infotainment technology.

Thanks for the suggestion. The only other Bluetooth device I have connected to my phone is my watch, and it's not coming from that!

I've also found that the navigation instructions sound much better (hifi quality) when I'm playing music, but I'm then prevented from controlling the volume of them separately. I really don't get how Skoda managed to mess this up so much when it works fine on SEATs.

How old is the phone and what Android version is it running?

Try a different phone if you can to see if it has the same issue.

Obviously go through the Android Auto settings when connected to the car just to make sure there is nothing strange set up.

Yeah it's not the phone—it worked fine on my previous car about a month ago, and the same thing happens with my wife's iPhone. I think it's just the way they've done things with the Android Auto implementation on the Scala. I assume the navigation instructions are being routed the same way as a phone call, and the audio is being processed as such. I think that happened on my last car, but it didn't sound as thin and tinny.

The map thing I mentioned in my original post is more annoying tbh, the audio is a minor niggle.

I can't comment re the "map thing"  as even though the Scala was on my shortlist recently, after 24 years I've moved to another make of car now - more to do with basic functions on the touch screen, my wife is a fully paid up member of the Luddite society. The Scala nearly was ok but at 6ft4" I wasn't totally comfortable(B pillar position).

Under sound settings do you have an equalizer setting?
