Higer Mileage Karoq - How reliable are they?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My wife passed her test only around 20 months ago. She is a.....more.....mature driver.

She's been cutting her teeth on a 2008 VW Polo, which to be fair has been fine. But once she hits two years NCB, we'd like to shop for something newer.

She has set her heart of something  bigger, SUV - mainly for ease of getting in and out of the vehicle over anything else. She's seen the Kamiq and she has also seen the Ford Kuga (the Ford more so because her friend is getting one - albeit she's getting brand new). The Ford worries me a little, there are stories of the Eco Boost 1.5 engines going bang.

With a budget of 11k and it MUST be Automatic, many of the Karoq's we are seeing at the moment are rather high mileage. Right now if you look at the AutoTrader website - once you've filtered out the manuals and the previously written-offs, mileage varies from 88k - 140k

I've been lucky enough that when we were a one- car household, I've had a car with much lower mileage, so those figures.....worry me a little.

Just wondering if there are any known issues with the Karoq to look for? If 80k - 100k is a little bit of a risk and if you were risking it, what would you be looking for? FSH? Cambelt (is it belt on these?)

It maybe the Karoq is a little out of our budget at this stage. In which case we'll think again - decide if we're willing to wait another year etc.

Cheers All.

What are you looking at 1.0 TSI DSG,s or 1.5 ACT DSG,s ?    (I looked at them on Autotrader and the Cat S.  which might be worth looking at.)

FSH of a 5 year old might have the Cam Belt changed, but VW Group / Skoda dropped the Recommendation of at 50,000 / 5 years last summer,

so maybe not done as the Service advice means longer before done.

As to FSH or FMDSH then a History is good, but is it a HISTORY OF EVERYTHING ACTUALLY DONE, as recommended.

I tend to run my cars up to around 150,000 miles, my last 5  cars did 108,000, 162,000, 153,000, 142,000 and 110,000. The 108,000 one was a 2013 DSG diesel Touran, I had no issues with the DSG. 30 years ago a 5 year old car could have rust issues, but that is no longer a problem. With all my last 5 cars I found around the 100,000 miles some mechanical parts, brake discs, suspension mountings would need replacement just due to wear. Once replaced they were fine. I didn’t have any engine or gearbox issues with any of the cars. One had a new clutch at 102,000 due to a weak spring. So as others have said look very closely at the service history, only consider ones with fixed annual 12 monthly services, avoid any that were on variable service intervals. These will have had fewer oil and filter changes this tends to cause problems as the vehicle ages. Unless you will be doing weekly  50 mile journeys avoid the diesels. I am a fan of the DSG gearbox, but reversing uphill slowly takes a bit of practice! I advise have as long a test drive as possible and carry out parking manoeuvre’s, especially on a slope. Also try and get a test drive in a new one too so you have a benchmark against which to compare any used one you drive.  You will see on this forum that many people remark/complain about the ride with 19” wheels so look carefully at the wheel and size of tyres fitted. Good luck.

You mention Kamiq and a Karoq. We have both. We bought the Karoq first for my wife and then 2 years ago I got a Kamiq.  My wife now she's tried the Kamiq prefers it over the Karoq. It's more nimble and for her easier to park. The DSG box is a delight to use.

@thamestrader Was your 2013 Diesel Touran a 1.6 TDI so had a DQ200 DSG, 7 speed dry, and did it get the Service Campaign 34H5 as many required?

So a DSG that a 1.0 or 1.5 TSI ACT FWD will have, and which some 2018,s had issues and also needed a Software update.  So a bit like the 2013-2015 DQ200,s.

PS

the 2018 Kangerooing issue with 1.5 TSI ACT,s was not just with manuals.   Test drives are important even 6 years on.

@Ootohere My Touran was the 2.0 L TDI with 6 speed DQ250, I had  the DSG oil and filter changed at 36,000, 72,000, and 100,000 miles slightly earlier than required. Gearbox was as smooth at 108,000 as when new. .

@thamestrader

Apples & pears then from the Karoq if not one with a 2.0 TSI or TDI or a 1.5 TSI ACT with Haldex.

As reliability is your concern (it would be for me too in your situation), why not just buy the official Skoda UK extended warranty? On our cars the cost has often repaid itself several times over.

Take the first car in Ootohere's post as an example,  a white Karoq,  SY67 YJS, with 71,431 miles.  The cost today of the warranty for that car is £295. That is the comprehensive warranty; the version covering only named components is £250.  Those prices would rise somewhat if you chose a different excess or intended to do more than 10,000 miles a year.

Thank you all for the replies.

I think we need to go and get ourselves behind the wheel of both a Karoq and Kamiq (at one point we sat down and tried to work out the exact VW equivalents - and that seems to be far more difficult than it should!)

Will stick with petrol I think. As said, needs to be DSG and won't be put-off from the higher mileage as it appears warranties are possible.

Maybe look to see if we can increase the budget to £12k - was surprised to see that WBAC were offering like £1700 on her 2008 Polo.......

Don't seem to be able to get the 0% APR's on "previously enjoyed" vehicles these days.
