Gearbox in emergency mode - no reverse gear

Featured Replies

2017 2.0 DSG Superb MK3 - 87000 miles

Looking advice on an issue I’m having.  Second time in the past month the message ‘Gearbox in emergency mode - no reverse gear’ has appeared.  All even gears stop working when I continue to drive with the message displayed.  Once I pull the car over, switch it off and back on again everything working fine.  Both times I have been driving for 60mins + in really heavy traffic so constantly stop/starting.  Would this just be a sensor issue?  Bought the car a few years back with 50k on the clock.  Looking back through the service history it had the transmission replaced at 25k so concerned it could something similar.  Also displaying ‘Oil change service and inspection due in 6 days’ so have it booked in with the garage.

Welcome.

What is it a 6 or 7 speed wet clutch DSG.

It could be something similar to the issue at 25,000 miles.  If a 6 speed DQ250 then it was due ab Oil and filter change at 65,000 miles. 40,000 miles after the new DSG was fitted.

If it is a DQ381 7 speed DSG then plenty have had issues and are having issues.  MCU,s.

It is 7 speed, I believe the DQ381.

I take it that having had the transmission replaced at 25k by Skoda I wouldn't have been expected to have it serviced at 80k?

If it was new with new oil and filter then 105,000 miles would be when the service was due,

If leaving it to 80,000 miles.  But that would not be the best idea.

Odd thing with Skoda / VW with new engines fitted under warranty and with now oil etc they might say needs serviced / Oil service weeks or months after fitted.

Just because they are plonkers.

They even told people due new spark plugs replaced in a 4 year old car that maybe had a new engine and plugs less than 2 years before.

Thanks for the quick response.  I didn’t own the car when the transmission was replaced but I assume it was new given that it was replaced by Skoda dealership.  I have it booked in with a VAG specialist for both a service and gearbox service so hopefully they can shed some light on it.

I have had this issue. Unfortunately it will very likely require the Mechatronics unit replacing. Mine had to be replaced at 49000 miles, luckily under warranty.

When was this replaced.  Have you had any issues since?

Sorry to step in like that, but I’m wondering few things which I believe will be helpful for others as well. If you or someone else know the answers, share them here.

1/ If the common failure point is a sensor, that means the more often oil servicing won’t prevent it. Of course, that’s not true for mechanical parts.

2/ Do you or someone else know, is the K2 sensor updated in after certain year or the gearbox is identical in 2017 and 2024 Superb?

3/ I guess that since you’re there, it’s good to change the K1 sensor as well?

4/ What would be the best source to buy the sensors? I see there are some available on eBay, e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/404588236912?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=Uf4kdw5MRfK&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=co51Dma8SCe&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

5/ Looks pretty straight-forward if you are good at soldering. Could it be done if you have VCDS to le-learn/reset the gearbox after sensors change?

Thanks mate!
