Oil Question - Help???

Featured Replies

Right, I don't get oil.

I mean... I 'get' oil...

like; I know what it does! But I don't get all the codes 5W-30, 10W - 40, etc.

Then, to confuse me even more, I look in the handbook to see what oil I need to buy for the Octy and apparently, for a diesel QG1 (variable servicing) I need VW506.01 or VW507.00

So now, I'm standing in the shop deciding which colour bottle I like best, oohh, blue with a yellow lid, mmmm pretty! oh oh oh, red bottle black lid, yeah get one of them! :P

According to the handbook, page 251, VW506.01 is "only for engines without diesel particle filter > see page 33"

Page 33:

"Code 77G on the vehicle data sticker indicates that your vehicle is equipped with a diesel particle filter."

Ok, I check...

It hasn't...

I deduce that my car has no particle filter.

So, first question (Finally): Am I right in thinking that I can use either VW506.01 or VW507.00 in my car????

OK, I shall continue. The car is a company car, the company pays for my fuel. Up until recently, we had fuel cards which you could use virtually anywhere for fuel and oil, including Shell garages. Oh, good, "Skoda recommends Shell Helix".

Ah ha, one bottle of Shell Helix Ultra VX 5W - 30 VW507.00 purchased on the card!

Then, I spot the Shell advertisement next to the bottles which states that this oil can be used in both Petrol and Diesel engines! Cue slight apprehension. 'that can't be right, can it?' Then think, OK, book says VW507.00 is ok, bottle says VW507.00. Must be OK! OK?

Stick it in, all is well again.

Company has recently changed fuel card and I can't use Shell garages or I have to pay for it myself :( Not the end of the world I know, but you don't get a dog and bark yourself do you!

So, as a guide I can now refuel at Morrisons   or the Texaco garage at Tibshelf services, Junction 28, M1.

OK, Second question then: again, standing back in the shop, looking at the lovely colourful bottles of Texaco's finest lubricants, what should I be looking for now that the bottles arn't going to say VW506.01 / VW507.00?

Is one bottle of 5W-30 the same as another?

PS - Sorry for the long post!

If it doesn't say VW 50*.** don't put it in basically.

Castrol edge I think might be the 507.00 but you really do have to check.

On variable you want 5w-30 oil for a TDI.

Cheers for that, have been very confused by the vw507, couldn't find anything in Halafords bearing that code. Will try the Shell garages.

I had a similar problem last week. Needed to buy some oil to top up my 2.0 FSI petrol but couldn't find any Shell Helix in Halfords, or anything conforming to the correct VW spec. Their book specified a Castrol oil which was

Go and buy a bottle of Shell Helix Ultra VX 5w-30 (VAG 507.00) from you local friendly Skoda dealer including a smart zipped bag with gloves, wipes and a paper funnel for

This may already have been said somewhere on the site.....but I'll say it again.

Skoda insist you use the correct VW Oils. IF an incorrect oil is used, the oil light will come on . This is due to a sensor that can tell the pigment of the oil. To avoid this, you can use standard Castrol GTX, which has the same pigment as the VW approved oils. My garage checked this with Skoda and they grudgingly agreed GTX can be used.

(at least in my car Octy 1.9 TDi DSG 2007).

Ant.

Try Opie Oils who are a site sponsor and have a special offer on at the moment.

I got 5 ltrs of 507.00 at less than
