Power steering / Gearbox noise when turning.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a noise that sounds like lack of fluid in power steering, but it is only heard when car is in motion when I turn, and only if gas pedal is applied, or car brakes with engine, no noise when there is no load on gearbox. I tried to find any contact point of wheel with something - nothing found. Tried to move engine forward on gearbox mount (there is a little play to do it) - probably even worse. I need to try in other direction. I heard that could be differential. Do you have such issue? Btw. 1.6 TDI manual 2019

I will be grateful for help.

It sounds like 200hz and possible from tyres. Have you change them recently? Is your alignment correct? Are they evenly worn? Are shocks worn. Also consider engine mounts.

Does the noise frequency change?

Alignment is correct. Noice appears on summer and winter tyres, it's not sound from tire. The closest match is when you have a car with too low level of fluid in power steering, se pump whine during turning, especially when car stand still. In my case sound is only when car is in motion, and when turning, louder on left turn, quieter on right. When I press the clutch sound disappear.

Check the oil level in the Gearbox and Diff ASAP.

Update.

After longer trip (30km+) sound disappeared. So if everything is heated (engine, gearbox etc.) something cancels this issue. Once everything cool down, the noise comes back.

Thanks for advice with oil level. Before I will check in manual which level is correct, do you have a advice?

You need to look up the exact gearbox and final drive that is fitted in your car. (Wikipedia can help.) Then there will be plenty of YouTube videos which will show you how to change the oil. That would be the better thing to do. Make sure you get the right oils some gearboxes and differentials use 2 different oils. Some are difficult to do and need special tools so a garage might be a better bet.
