Yeti 5 speed gearbox oil change problem.

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

We are trying to change the oil in my mates 2016 Yeti 2.0 110bhp 5 speed gearbox.

We drained the gearbox and tried to fill with the new Fuchs oil but right away, oil started to flow out of the fill hole. It seems that the box did not drain properly although some oil had come out of the drain hole.

It was as if the new oil was not draining down into the bottom of the gearbox very quickly so we tried putting fresh oil in slowly but that made no difference. With a 500ml syringe, we manage to take nearly a litre out of the fill hole but it was old darker oil.

We opened the drain plug again but there was less than 100mm came out. For some reason the oil is not flowing through and down in the gearbox.

It was mentioned there is a vent pipe that could be blocked causing air to be trapped, preventing the oil flowing.

Can anyone shed any light on where this pipe I or how we can get oil back in to the gearbox as it only seems to be old oil I the top section and nothing below at the drain plug.

Cheers

Dave

Is there actually a transmission drain plug?

Given that the oil is for life and there is no service requirement it would surprise me that they would continue the expense of machining and parts for a drain plug.

There can be no airlock if you had removed the filler plug before draining.

We did remove the 17mm hex fill plug first and a trickle of oil came out. We then removed the 17mm hex drain plug and more came out but we are not sure how much but it didn't seem like 2 litres. There was nearly a litre syringed out from the fill hole. We tried putting oil in with the drain plug out to verify it was draining ok but basically very little is coming out.

Any reason the oil is not flowing through to the drain hole?

Any ideas?

Drain gearbox oil when hot after spirited drive.

Drain with car level not jacked up.

@FatblokeVRS when I done my wife's 2015 Fabia 5-speed manual (PED(?) 02T) on a pre-test to check what tools I'd need so that I could get the filler plug out (and back in) and get at the drain plug when I took the filler plug fully out an amount of unexpected (but oil bowl ready) so unmeasured oil came out the filler hole with car level (tyres on blocks to have room to get the annoying fantastic-plastic under-shield off) oil cool or cold in box.

On actually doing the job I tilted the car towards one corner to get more out of the box but even with the oil hot for drain and filling with car at level and then titled I didn't get anywhere the service fill in. Obviously I didn't want to overfill.

For a fuller change of old oil to new with engine oil it takes two changes of new oil to get nearer full new oil because of residue at each drain so with this gearbox I just accept it'll take two goes for higher new ratio and less dilution from old oil.

I've no idea how similar or dissimilar the Yeti 5-speed manual box and its installation and filling is to my wife's 2015 Fabia 5-speed box (PED(?) 02T) so I'm just giving my experience - and if you crush your legs don't come running to me.
