Driver assist - Front assist (automatic braking) over sensitive

Featured Replies

We have had the car for 3 weeks and on Friday, when I took some friends to hospital to see their daughter, the following happened.

I was at the junction of a roundabout in the left lane of two lanes. As I move forward to cross the roundabout the car next to me (on my right) also moved forward (slightly ahead of me) and, as he/she moved to the left to circle around the roundabout, my car slammed on the brakes. The manoeuvres on both our parts were perfectly normal for a two lane roundabout, but the Skoda seemed to think that the other car was about to collide with me. Had there been a car following me I am sure that they would have tail ended me. The whole thing was pretty disconcerting.

Having looked at this forum, I can see that the sensitivity of this feature can be adjusted up or down on the Superb mk3, but I cannot see any means of doing so on the infotainment system of our 2025 mk4. Does anyone know how to do this on the mk4. Thanks

I don’t know if there’s a solution for this at the moment. I’ve experienced it a few times myself, and it’s not very pleasant.

You need to be careful at intersections if you try to move in quickly, and in parking lots, you should park slowly, like a beginner, otherwise, you risk a sudden brake.

Pay attention to people passing behind the car, even if they are at a considerable distance, and also to various reflections.

I have seen a video of the Superb mk3 and you can change the Front Assist sensitivity on it. I think it had an off setting plus 3 other sensitivity levels. They have clearly decided to remove this option from the mk4 and it is downright dangerous. I don’t mind emergency braking if I am going back, but if the car does what it did last Friday, we are safer with the system turned off altogether. The safety systems were one of the main reasons behind buying this car!

I'd like to know how to adjust the sensitivity of the front assist system. My Mk4 gives the collision warning when I'm braking and have plenty of space, it has also performed an emergency stop on a number of occasions when I'm on a roundabout ( and have right of way) when a larger vehicle is waiting to join the roundabout in front of me and on my left.

Too much sensitivity on the Emergency Braking for me. Approaching a central refuge with a pedestrian waiting in it. As I neared the refuge the pedestrian moved to get a better view of traffic behind me and WHAM on go the brakes ferociously. I have also had this horrible experience on a speed hump coming out of the dealers where I bought the car. It is more than heavy braking, it feels like hitting something solid. Ridiculous that there is no way to adjust it.

The rear braking is a problem for me. When reversing into my driveway occasionally (not always) it slams on with a huge bang almost as if you have reversed into something. On investigation the car is no where near anything. Engaging reverse again and reversing then works very smoothly.

I did have a problem in a car wash when trying to drive out after it had finished and again the front braking this time slammed on with a huge bang. Quite unnerving. My previous S3 Superb had no such issues. Might need to get it adjusted by Skoda.

Terry this is Emergency Braking Assist. I have also had it activate when not expected. There is a thread on this but it appears that on the Mk3 the sensitivity could be adjusted but not on the Mk 4.

I agree, quite frightening when it happens.

Thanks John. Glad it is seen by others. My S3 used to just stop moving and beep an alert when a car was about to pass behind when reversing.

This happened to me last night. I've had the car for almost 2 months and driven 1600 miles and not had it happen before. But I was at a roundabout, not too close to the line and was not going too fast. The other cars on the roundabout were all driving normally. The emergency brake slammed on. It was quite frightening as in that instance, because I wasn't expecting it, I panicked slightly for a split second until I realised what it was. Fortunately I had seen this thread already so I knew what it was. To be fair, if it had been a real collision situation then I'd have been very grateful as it stopped instantly - the system clearly works well for that. But when it was a false collision it wasn't pleasant. The seatbelt does hold you tight!

Just on another safety note I have noticed the seat belt automatically takes up slack soon after you set off. Not had that in a car before.

New to me too. I find it reassuring that the car gives you a cuddle as it sets off.

The front assist and auto hold should be disabled in car washes.
